Modifications to holow points ...

not knowing what to title this but wanting to ask at any rate....

An NRA lifer and trusted friend showed me a 45acp round. When I looked in the nose of the hollow point here was a small bead in there. He told me that was his own "special addition". A small metal pellet that was wedged in place. Claiming that after the round hit the intended target the metal bead continued on to do further damage.

Fact or fiction ?

What other little modifications have people made to a hollow points ??

I doubt it...there are a couple manufacturers that use a polymer or "plastic" ball/bead to fill in the hollow point for better feeding...

I am not an attorney however, I would think that if you "modify" a factory round and use it for self defense it could work against you in court.

Premium factory ammo has gotten very good over the years with excellent terminal ballistics so I don't believe there is any reason to do any home made enhancements to them and in fact, it might very well have some liability attached to doing so.

Buy a good premium round that feeds reliably in your gun and leave it alone.

What about cutting the cross in it like they do on movies (I think they might have shown Reese do it in Terminator)?

For better penetration on vampires?

Personaly I would not modify any defense rounds I carry. I agree with Verk 100%. Get a good defensive round that works reliably in your gun, leave it alone (no mods) and hope you never need it.

Agreed.

Plus, his logic is a little flawed. Lets say you put a BB in the cavity of a .45 ACP hollowpoint and shot it at someone. You have a BB going 800 or 850 FPS... thats about the same from an airgun. Penetration? The bullet would be shoving the BB forward.

Aguila ammo has something like that. The bullets are designed to split up in 4 pieces.

Might be okay for varmint and hunting use but for obvious liability reasons I would not modify factory ammunition for self-defense use.
