Green Ammo

When I purchased my gun the other day the owner said they have an indoor range but would be requiring the use of "Green" ammo in the coming months. Apparently lead free ammo. Has anyone else heard of this.

Yeah, it's basically shreadded copper (or other metal) that's compressed into the bullet shape. 9mm is running about $26 for a box of 50.

I heard that they are also starting to make bullets out of nylon that are supposed to have the same ballistics as lead. I dont know if you can buy it yet, but I guess it is the future of ammo.

SASS used wax bullets when they had one competition inside a casino in vegas.

Soooo, if they can't take our guns away, they just make frilly tree hugger ammo?

Thats what I initially thought (and still do to some degree). This is how I understand it, if I am wrong feel free to correct me. It actually allows indoor ranges to not need as fancy of a ventilation system, thus reducing the cost of the set-up.

I think everyone knows lead's pretty toxic (and if you didn't get the memo, you know now). While shooting lead is the least of what we're exposed to, which includes barium and antimony. I for one am willing to be environmentally conscious _WHEN_ the science is good.

I'd like to point out the advances in the last 150 years in powder, each of which made the powder burn more cleanly. We all use smokeless, non-caustic powder at the range to protect ourselves, and our equipment.

I don't necessarily perceive the environmentalists as our enemies. They're just mistaken, and misguided about a lot of things. If protecting the environment means I get to continue to hunt, and pass hunting on to my children, then I'll protect the environment, myself, and my fellow shooters at the same time.

I propose we all take the time to look at options such as frangible bullets, clean fire ammunition (Speer is the only one making it that I know of but I think this will change quickly), and better and safer powders. This is nothing new, but it is an important, and continued evolution in our sport and passtime.

There were a few ranges in PA that were inside semi-trailers and you had to use frangible ammo so it would not go through the walls of the trailer. I never shot in one or got a good look, but I would imagine the bullet traps are lacking.
