Best defense round?
I have just picked up a XD.40 4 inch. I normally carry a Kahr CW40, which I love. It’s small, accurate, and as reliable as any gun I have ever owned.I shoot 155gr Tap Hornady. I carry it in a Galco, Yaqui paddle. I would be using the XD more for next to my bed, (next to the 870).
I am wondering what bullet does every one use for defense? Also what holster? (I like the Yaqui, but the XD seems a bit big for it.) Thanks for any help. |

Federal Premium Personal Defense. 165 Grain Hydra-Shok JHP
Stock#P40HS3 These shoot very well in my XD40 Service Model. Same POI as my practice ammo. Holsters: XD gear..............lame!! Uncle Mike's paddle.................acceptable, but nothing more than that. Have a Crossbreed IWB on order. Already have one for my 1911, and I expect this one to be equally as impressive. BTW, welcome aboard!!! |

My research has led me to the Federal HST law enforcement ammo. They put on a clinic at several police dept around the country a while back and demonstrated the superiority of the HST ammo over Winchester Ranger.
You can buy the ammo from GTDIST.COM for around $15.00 a box. Just download the ammunition purchase agreement, sign it and fax it back to them. Federal requires them to sell to law enforcement only, it's not a law so thats why you have to go through the dog and pony show of signing the form. You can also check out Doubletap ammo, as they are well respected in the self defense ammo category. All or most of their ammo is loaded hot and they use the excellent Gold Dot hollow point bullet. |

Everyone wants to carry the HST or Ranger because many LEA use it. Realistically, any of the current manuf. JHP ammo is good. Some LEA ammo will be better against auto glass (bonded cores) but for CCW/HD that's not really an issue. Speer GD, Rem GS, Hornady, WWSTHP, etc. all work well (although I only like XTPs in 45, alot of penetration in smaller calibers) if put in the right spot.

Speer Gold Dot is hard to beat. Golden Saber by Remington is one that always shoots accurate out of anything. The Winchester Ranger stuff is good but I had 2 oversized cases in one box that would not chamber so I don't use it anymore. For me now it's 165 or 180 Gold Dot, 180 out of full size guns and 165 out of compacts.

They used to want a copy of your LE ID sent in with that form. I do not know if that is still a requirement with them.

Speer Gold Dots seem to be the most widely used rounds by the PDs around here. I suppose most of the new JHP are pretty dang good.
