Short HST range report

The Federal HST came in so I gave it a try.

Used it in the XD9 SC, Federal HST 124 gr. +P

Fed, fired and ejected flawlessly.

Recoil of the +P not noticably different than standard ammo. Nice mild typical 9mm recoil.

It is in some sort of plated case (nickel plated maybe?). Are these cases reloadable? On the upside they won't get tarnished like plain brass from being handled.

Definitely hit low. At 10 yds, POI was about a two inches lower than my "usual" POA with standard UMC FMJ 115 gr. Anybody know if that's a characteristic of the +P or could it be the bullet shape or what? Groups were very tight (about an inch) but it was definitely hitting a tad low with this ammo.

Summary: given the reports of complete expansion and weight retention in just about every condition, and it cycled reliably in my carry gun, this will be my carry ammo for a while. It's also cheaper than most. 50 rnd box for about 19 bucks at ammunitiontogo.com

When you buy that ammo online do you have to pay some outrageous shipping fee?

It cost me $65 and change total for three boxes, including shipping. And it arrived fast. Only a few days.

The Hornady I was carrying was between $15 and $18 per box of 25 so I feel like I'm getting a bargain on the HST.

It's not uncommon for slight POI changes when switching ammo. Kentucky windage or drift/file your sights if it's off that much.

I tried a few mags of HST +P's 230gr in my XD 45 Service. It shot lower than 2" consistently!

I didn't like the idea of having to remember to hold way high in case a "tense situation" occured, so I went back to Speer Gold Dots that hit the same as standard FMJ's.

Thanks for the replies about the change in POI. I'll still carry the HST but it's good to know for sure that it wasn't just me.

If the SHTF, I don't imagine taking careful aim anyway. Point and bang, bang, bang . . . bang . . . continue until all mags are empty or assailant stops his lethal behavior. If assailant has not stopped the behavior once out of ammo, start smashing his head with gun . . .

Anyone know why the HST +P would hit low at short range (10 yds).

I charge actual cost on shipping from my zip code to yours based on weight.

There are no extra fees like Haz Mat on loaded ammo. I stopped selling stuff that was Haz Mat years ago because of the hoops you have to jump through.
