Very newbie question
Ok so I'm new to the world of handguns and ammo. Hopefully in the next week or so I'll be picking up my new XD in either 9mm or .40. My question to everyone is what kind of ammo is allowed to be shot at the range? There are a lot of acronyms I'm still learning so I'm just curious what can be shot at a range. FMJ, HP, JHP.......
I'd like to get in on some of the sales going on now but want to make sure I'll be able to shoot the ammo I buy at the range. Thanks!! |

FMJ= Full Metal Jacket is likely the most used range ammo.
Most indoor ranges will not allow you to shoot steel core ammo.

I've got the xd40 tactical. It is great! You can't go wrong with XD and the 40 gives you more stopping power than the 9 without the kick of the 45, which really isn't as bad as some portray it to be.

40 has considerable more kick than the 45 and a little more kick than the 9mm.

Thanks for the info So Flo.
Spatch...I'm still debating on what to get. I'm thinking the 9mm to start with only because I'd really like my wife to get into shooting and I'm thinking the 9mm with it's light recoil might help give her the confidence to get more involved. Then I can get the .40 after she steals the 9mm as her gun. |

I think most indoor ranges ask that you use jacketed ammo to cut down on lead in the air. At least I think that it the reason, but it seems like the ventilation should be able to handle it.
