Buying supplies online or in the shop?

Prices seem to be better online, but adding in the haz mat fees and extra shipping and handling fees seem to eat up that savings.

Where do you guys get your supplies? I'll be reloading .45 acp.

You can offset the hazmat fee, but only if you buy in bulk, and a mean several thousand at a time.

I get most of my stuff from Sportsman's Warehouse. They seem to have good prices and when you factor in the shipping and hasmat fees you really can't beat their prices where I live.

I own a store and can't buy the stuff as cheap wholesale as I can get most of it from Sportsman's sad as it is...got to love the big boxes?!?

Try Powder Valley: http://www.powdervalleyinc.com/ You are right, if you are looking for 1K primers & 1# of powder, shipping & HM will eat you alive. Buy at least 10 units (ie, 5K primer, 5# of powder) for best savings. That's $2 per unit added to the price. The shipping pretty much eq. ST in most states. If you are buying small, your local gunshop is still your best bet.

I go in with a buddy or two and order in bulk.

Powder Valley typically has the best prices.

I rarely buy any less the 8# of powder and 10-15k of primers.

Buying 8 lbs of powder was going to be a typical order, but with primers, I just didn't think ordering 5K primers to save 1/4 of 1 cent per primer was worth it. It adds up to about $12 or $13 difference between 1000 and 5000 primers.

I haven't looked at the local shops for their prices yet. I read on Midway's site that primers and powder ship separately with those fees, that's the reason for curiosity...

It's not so much you save 1/4c per primer but the extra HM fee. Like I said, break it down to "units", You buy 1K & you add $20 per unit. Buy 5K & you ad $4 per unit. You are saving way more than 1/4c per primer.

I see what you mean. I think the going in together with a buddy and buying in bulk is better. Part of the dilemma is where to keep 15000 primers and 400 lbs of powder...

I buy bullets online but buy my powder & primers locally. The prices are comparable to online & I don't have the Hazmat fees. However local options are becoming less & less. For example, our BassPro Shop no longer sells primers. I'm down to 1 local range that sells reloading supplies with good prices. I have a couple of others that have such high markups on their stuff now that online with Hazmat fees is less, even in low qty.

Bullets - I shop for the best price through MidwayUSA, Cabelas, PowderValley, and Wideners.

This is what my original thought was to do. Bullets online, powder and primers locally.

For those who purchase online...do the primers and powder ship separately and require two haz mat fees? Or are they simply saying those items will ship separate of anything else you buy, but the powder and primers go together?
