Assistance needed. Reloading question

Finely got a round to setting up my 45 acp dies.I'm using laser cast 230g RN bullets. The problem I'm having is with the bullets It seems with the over all length. The bullets have a ridge on them. Then they taper. Cycling the dummy rounds I made. The slide wont lock up unless I hit the back of the slide. then the slide is real hard to open. Now it only does this if I have the over all length set above 1.236 At this depth the ridge on the bullet is level with the casing and all works fine.Is the 1.236 over all length to short.

It sounds likethe OAl is too long & the bullet is actually pushing into the lands. I had this problem loading som TCFP I had been using in a 1911 (I assume you are loading for a XD).

I reload cast lead 200 gr. bullets for my XD45 and I set the OAL at 1.200". This seems to make them seat just fine in the chamber...

thanks for the information . the xd was the gun i was trying them in. will make some live rounds up and try them this coming week end at the 1.236 length.i did cycle them in my 1911 with no problem 1.236 to 1.264
wonder what makes them work in one but not the other.

Machineing (SP?) diffrences. No two barrels/chambers will ever be the same.

OAL 1.240-.1260

Check your crimp... it might be a little loose. Should be about .469... just enough to catch your fingernail on.

I think my loads with exact same bullet needed to be 1.230". Lots of manuals use 1.230" to 1.240" for the 230 gr RN in 45 ACP.

I'd agree on OAL. Although I reload 200 gr and not 230, I had very similar problems when I first started reloading. Sure enough, I shortened the OAL and now they are perfect.

Take the bbl. out of the pistol & use it as a guage. Drop the round into the chamber & it should fall freely in & fall out. The base of the round should drop in so the base is flush w/ the hood of the bbl.
