federal case split?

I went shooting this morning. I took several guns but also a box of ammo for the xd40sc.. I carry 165 grain federal hydra-shok in it.. I never rechamber the round in the chamber, I always shoot it, so the bullet wasnt set back.. After shooting the chambered round, and putting 100 rounds of Remmington UMC down the pipe, I decided to go ahead and shoot a couple of mags of carry ammo.. on the 4th round of the 2nd mag, it just didnt sound right.. I cant really explain why, but it made me check the barrel to see if I had a problem.. Barrel was clear, so i finished the mag and started picking up my brass. One of the federal brass was split!! I know it was mine because I was at my private range, no one else shoots there, and it had to come from this session because I lay a tarp to catch the brass.. I can only assume this was the one that sounded funny.. Ill get pics up tomorrow, I plan on calling federal to see if they want the split case.. Im not complaining, just think they may want it to see if they have a problem..

Anyone else ever had this happen?

Never with Federal. I shoot .40 Service and my brother a .40 SC, and we both use Federal almost exclusively. I noticed at one of our recent outtings to the range that a couple of the casings from a box of Speer Gold Dot a friend had given us (having sold his .40 for a 9mm) seemed slightly deformed - they had a ring about 1/32 of an inch from the rear of the casing where they looked slightly bulged.

I'd heard from a guy at the range that he'd had problems with Speer in his M&P .40 and stuck with Federal because it - and I've followed suit. Let me know how this pans out though.

I've never had a problem with Speer at all. I won't ever carry Hydrashoks. The only thing I've noticed on any ammo I've carried is the ring at the base of where th bullet is seated in the casing; not a bulge, but almost like a ring where that section of the casing is polished.

That is the reason I dont reload Federal brass it tends to be on the brittle side. I can load Winchester, Rem, CCI forever in handguns without issues, I might get 1 or 2 loads out of fed brass before it starts splitting.

Yeah, factory loads had it happen too,in 40.FC was the headstamp though that had the problems-haven't seen too many with federal stamp. It was pretty well known with people that reloaded 40's to stay from fc brass.9mm wasn't a problem, nor was 45.Supposedly,the brass was redesigned and the web area was made stronger.

Most of the problems came when reloading the brass though, not in factory rounds.

I know it's no consolation, but I have some 17hmr unfired that the case is split.
