vik, nothing wrong w/ the current digital scales. The Lee beam scale is crap. You must zero the scale w/ the pan in it. You are quite lucky nothing was more severely damaged than your mag & grips. If your scale zero was off, you have no idea what pwoder charge you used & w/ fast burning powders like TG, Clays, BE, you are lucky to still have a pistol.
Throw the Lee scale away. If you want a digital, pop for the Dillon. It's the least sensative I have used & it's easy to read (I have old eyes). The new Dillon is equal to any of the high end beam scales. Personnaly, I would set the BE on the shelf & go w/ Unique right now. It is less likely to cause you problems if you make a small mistake. Save the fast pwoders for when your experience level is high. |

Quick check for basic accuracy as well... weigh a bullet.
So, big question is.. did you zero the scale with the pan on it? My starting load, and target load, is 4.5gr Bullseye with a 230gr RNL. Check your books.

I'll toss my .02 in here.
I learned on Bullseye, and I found out the hard way (KB) that it is pretty mean powder! I would start with Unique or something a little more forgiving. Like fredj338 said, Bullseye leaves no room for error, you should consider changing powder until you get a little more experience, then go back to Bullseye... but start at the low end of the tables. Also, as for the "felt like sand in your face" part, I bet you always wear shooting glasses from here on out!

I may be wrong but I think I missed anyone saying what "zero" should look like on the scale. With the EMPTY pan in place and the ball at zero AND the vernier ( small slider on the right) at zero, turn the adjusting screw until the pointer on the end of the beam is at the mark (the machined, unpainted mark) on the scale base. The beam will be HORIZONTAL at that point.
You then set the weight you want the power charge to be. This will make the beam fall below the mark. Add the powder until the pointer returns to the mark and that should be the selected charge.
