I've never tried it...but I would guess the primer would likely go off

I've done it by accident - twice! On 45 ACP on my Dillon 550B press. Nothing happened either time - guess I was lucky!!!

Thanks for bringing this up rogerxd45, because I have a similar (but weird) question. I have a couple rounds (a .45acp and a .40s&w) sitting on my desk that I cannot use because I don't have any guns chambered for them. The reason I have them is because when I was deciding what caliber pistol I wanted to buy, I went to the range and tried one gun of each caliber. While I was there, I took one of each caliber rounds home with me in my pocket so I could look them over, compare them, and make a decision (
Thanks. Last edited by XDAndMe : 09-28-2007 at 04:16 AM. |

I've deprimed a number of cases with a live primer in them. (was given a bunch of old primed .38 special cases, did not know what type of primer was in them)
Nothing happened. I was using a single stage Lee press. My guess is that the primer wasn't hit fast enough or crushed hard enough to go off. I still would recommend a full face shield when attempting this. I also put a piece of steel between me and the press, and was wearing some heavy welding gloves to protect my hand. As for pulling bullets out of live cases, use a propert bullet puller, if you don't want to buy one, most reloaders have one, ask if you can borrow it.

This topic has come up on other forums. The basic conclusion is that you can remove live primers without any problem. Of course you should always wear safety glasses when ever you do anything reloading. I have done it a couple of times without any problem. If you are still concerned, spray a little WD40 into the case. This will destroy the primer and you can then de-prime as normal. If you planning to use the brass later, make sure you clean the WD40 out throughly.
Either way you should not have a problem.

I've not only removed live primers, I've re-installed them and they still go BOOM
