Exactly! While not recommended, it is completely safe if done slowly. As far as decomissioning live ammo. It's best to pull the bullets & dump the powder. Even spraying WD40 around the primer pocket won't guarantee it won't fire. Buy an inertia/hammer type puller or give them to a handloader that should have one.

The reason I have them is because when I was deciding what caliber pistol I wanted to buy, I went to the range and tried one gun of each caliber. While I was there, I took one of each caliber rounds home with me in my pocket so I could look them over, compare them, and make a decision (). Well I settled on 9mm, but now I have no way to dispose of the other two cartridges. I'm not going to throw away live rounds or mail out 2 cartridges What is the best way that I can safely decommission live rounds and make them duds without spending any money? I thought about pulling the bullets out of the casings with a pair of pliers and then dumping the powder... but I am afraid of the friction causing a spark. I also considered that because it's pretty much an airtight seal, unseating a bullet would cause negative pressure in the casing and I don't know how that would affect the live primer.

Thanks.
just give them to someone at the range or leave it on the bench at the range

Just throw them in the trash. no big deal. If you'd like dab a little motor oil on the primer area, or soak them in oil, that will render the primer inert.

I've thrown small amounts of ammo away, not much to worry about.

I have deprimed live primers and even upside down live primers in a press without any issues.

Alot of times the primer is slightly damaged so don't feed it back into the machine or it could jam the press.

If I feel like it I will save it for last and manually put the primer in that stage or just toss it.

It sucks to break a 100 pack for one primer but then you just keep it aside for any future screw ups and you have 99 more.

Oil destroys primers better than anything and as said, just toss them in the trash. A small round popping in the incinerator or a landfill isnt going to hurt anything.

Wow, I had no idea it was that easy to render a primer inert.

Thanks, guys.
