Best 9mm manstopper (?) load
I just got my XD 9 - love the fit in my hand and I'm pretty sure I can handle the recoil.. So now what load to carry? I heard a lot about spear gold dot, as a good self defense load. I just got my ohio ccw permit, and thus have to live with what I can carry in the gun and no spare mag. So as long as I can shoot and hit my target. What load do the experts recommend I carry?-David

+1 on the Corbon JHP, that's a great load. There are two other outstanding ones I've found that I like just a tad bit better, and use them currently.
* Corbon/Glaser's "Powrball" ammo. It's designed to be a high velocity, deep penetration round that'll get through glass, layers of clothing, etc., and still expand. Not cheap, but tests and reviews have proven it very effective, and it shoots cleanly and accurately in all my 9mm's. * Doubletap Ammo's 115gr, 124gr, and 147gr loads. These are all outstanding in their expansion, and ballistics results. Their velocity and muzzle energy are probably the highest I've seen available--anywhere--in commercially loaded 9mm ammo. And yet they still are pretty affordable. |

There are basically two trains of though regarding this (1) better to go with the most effective bullet regardless of price or availability (2) or better to go with decent/average bullet because of the cost effectiveness and the relatively low cost to practice with.
Recommended Duty/Self-Defense loads

i second this or federals expanding full metal jacket (for winter carry) since it cant become clogged like regular JHP's and in the winter the chance of a JHP getting clogged is alot higher then in the summer when people dont have on as thick of clothing

Just FYI, I'm not trying to be a dick... but in my opinion, there's no "manstopper" round. Apparently the FBI did research on this "manstopper" myth in 1987... they concluded that it was in fact a myth, unless the brain is hit.
Believe what you want, but I don't think anything has changed since 1987!! On the talk of ammo, I like the Winchester Ranger Talon ammo... it looks like it'd tear some stuff up. I have the 19 page ebook if anyone wants me to e-mail it to them. Here's some good info from their research: Physiologically, no caliber or bullet is certain to incapacitate any individual unless the brain is hit. Psychologically, some individuals can be incapacitated by minor or small caliber wounds. Those individuals who are stimulated by fear, adrenaline, drugs, alcohol, and/or sheer will and survival determination may not be incapacitated even if mortally wounded. Barring a hit to the brain, the only way to force incapacitation is to cause sufficient blood loss that the subject can no longer function, and that takes time. Even if the heart is instantly destroyed, there is sufficient oxygen in the brain to support full and complete voluntary action for 10-15 seconds. Kintetic energy does not wound. Temporary cavity does not wound. The much discussed “shock” of bullet impact is a fable and “knock down” power is a myth. The critical element is penetration. The bullet must pass through the large, blood bearing organs and be of sufficient diameter to promote rapid bleeding. Penetration less than 12 inches is too little, and, in the words of two of the participants in the 1987 Wound Ballistics Workshop, “too little penetration will get you killed.”
