.308 versus .30-06
Which is the better cartridge for an all-around bolt-action?
I have .30-06s, but no .308s. Ammo appears to cost the same currently. One is short-action, one is long.

They are basically the same round upto 165gr bullets. The 06 pulls away when you move to 180gr & up. For a deer round, I would probably go 308, for elk & moose, I would lean to the 06 for the heavier bullets.

Here's some basic ballistic data comparing two equal-weight rounds from both .308 and 30-06. Both rounds are 150gr in these charts. They don't really give you much data above 200yds, but it's a good start.
http://www.remington.com/products/am...=L30062*L308W4 The .308 is a killer round, but it looks like the 30-06 has a little more velocity, energy, and doesn't drop quite as quickly. It would be nice to see an actual line graph though. |

The .30-06 benefits from it's age. There are a lot of different types of ammo available for it.
Is the only benefit of the .308 the fact that it fits in a short-action?

I feel the .30-06 is the better round. Much more of a diverse cartridge.
