40 necked down to a 9?
Last night I wqas watching Dallas SWAT on A&E and the retiring coporal was getting lots of airplay. The camera showed him getting for his last raid. He unholstered his Sig 226 and said it fired a 40,necked-down to a 9mm. What the heck did he have? all I can come up with is a .357Sig! Yeah, it's not an earth-shaking question but it is my first thread!

I have heard that basically a 357 sig is a 9 mm round in a 40 casing but I cant verify this info. |

The 357sig is not exactly a 40s&w necked to 9mm, but poretty close. Thinks of the 357sig as a 9mm+P++.

Externally the base of a 357 Sig and a 40S&W are identical they differ only at mouth where the 357 Sig is necked down to accept a 9mm bullet (not a 0.357 diameter bullet but a 0.355 dia bullet).
![]() ![]() Hence the only difference between a XD-40 and an XD-357 is the barrel. The slide and magazine are the same since the base of the cartridges are the same. If you get picky there are a few differences internally. The 357 Sig is slightly thicker wall as you get close to the base. This is to support the additional pressure the 357 sig (40,000psi) operates at above the 40S&W(35,000psi). mcb |

If you form .357 Sig cases by necking-down .40 cases, you'll find that the case will be a tad short. Lots of people do it, though.
On the other hand, .400 Cor-Bon is, in fact, .45ACP +p cases necked down to 10mm. |

If you are looking for a little more info on the P226-----http://remtek.com/arms/sig/model/226/226.htm
Glad I was not the only one who could not find anything else to watch on TV...... I can not find the thread now, so correct me if I am wrong. The P226 is the best of both worlds... Smaller 9mm moving fast, VS larger .45acp moving slower. The argument being that the faster, but smaller bullet on the 226 (9mm with more powder) will be better at stopping the BG than a standard 9mm. And will not have the perceived problems of the larger .45, recoil and …. Bullet drop?.... can’t remember. Any one? |

The 357sig was developed to give a semiauto version of the 125gr/357mag loading. It has been rightly or wrongly dubbed the stopping power standard by which all other rounds are judged. The 357sig round offers a hard hitting, low recoiling pistol that carries more rounds than a 357mag. Better than a 45acp, probably not. Better than a 9mm, I would say yes, unless you are using 9mm+P+, then they are very close. It's funny, most guys tht love the 9mm will quote 9mm+P or +P+ rounds as what they base their opinions on. Then they will tell you the 357sig is little better, though it achieves another 100fps on top of 9mm+P+.
I like the round, but then I always liked the 125gr/357mag round too. It is softer recoiling than full power 45acp, you do get a few extra rounds in a like size pistol. It is flatter shooting, but that means nothing at normal pistol ranges (out to 25yds, even @ 50yds they are close). Here in Kalif. we are limited to 10rd mags so in a like size pistol, I would & did take the 357sig as a CCW round. It's very easy to shoot, feeds reliably & is extremely accurate, at least in my P239. What's not to like excpet the cost of factory ammo & I handload. You can handload 357sig for the saem cost as 9mm. |
