9x18 vs 9mm Luger (Para)`

Greetings,

I am guessing, another stupid question. hehehe

Can you reload 9x18 (Makarov) using 9x19 (9mm luger) cases and bullet but crimping the bullet lower so it will have the right measurement to fit the 9x18?

I picked up a few 9x18 cases on the ground at the range while picking mines and I noticed the case is just a little bit shorter with the 9x18.

Thank you

so you want to use the 9mm luger cases to make bullets for your 9x18?
if so that wont work unless you trim the case the OAL might be the ssame but when you chamber the round the top of the case rests aginst the part of the barrel where the rifling starts im not sure what that part is called but the case will stick out by 1 millimeter it might fire but it would not be safe at all

I remebered this old article that spoke to the issue of using 9mm to make MAK brass:

Simply trim 9mm Luger cases to 0.700-inch in length, chamfer lightly, then size and load as normal. Peters says that's exactly how RCBS proceeded when they developed their dies. The expander and larger Makarov bullet remove most of the taper from the Luger brass, and normal firing finishes the job. see http://www.reloadingroom.com/page32.html

But why bother when there is plenty of Makarov brass in existance?

The key statement above is shortening the case not seating the bullet lower. The case needs to be trimmed down to the same length as the Mak cases.

Remember that the case headspaces on the case mouth not the bullet. The red arrow shows where the case headspaces notice it's on the edge of the case mouth and not the bullet.

Isn't the Makarov a larger bullet (like 0.365")? https://www.hornady.com/shop/?ps_ses...50776a2263f2fb

Nope, the bullet is too small and and the case will more than likely split. I have tried for the 9.2x19 in a Mak, and usually it splits the case. the Mak bullet is bigger and the shape of the cases are different.....

Greetings,

Thank you very much guys for the answers. It is very clear now and I learned something new. I am quite a newbie concerning the reloading and I see that more things are there than things that meet the eyes.

Thank you
