high price ammo is here
I just returned from the range and stopped by good old Wally World to refill only to be sticker shocked by the 15-30% price hike on ammo. I knew it was coming but didn't expect it all at once on Sept 1.
Luckily I stocked up a lot but still feel inadequate since my session easily runs 500 rds; mostly .40 and some .45. I probably need to stop shooting all the gun and just stick with whichever I use for HD. Have you notice the ammo hike at your places yet??? Quick question: I lubed the guns pretty good before heading to the range. It will no doubt makes it a lot easier to clean. I also ran a wet patch of FP10 down all barrels. My question is: Can I just clean the barrel and lube but not clean the whole gun as I plan to go shooting next week again before I put them back into the safe. It takes forever to clean the whole guns using just field strip and seems not worth it since they are well lube with FP10. |

I'm sure that there are as many opinions on this as people who have a$$holes, but for me, I clean my weapons only when necessary (i.e. when they're dirty.) When I go to the range, I usually just run a boresnake a few times and lube immediately after shooting. I usually field srtip and clean my range guns every 500-1000 rounds. My pocket guns get a bi-weekly cleaning (lint does accumulate) and my every-day carry gets a full field strip cleaning weekly and lubed daily. I usually detail strip and clean my weapons at least twice a year, and that's when I replace the recoil springs as well.
Another thing that determines how much I clean is how dirty the ammo is that I'm shooting. The cleaner stuff (MagTech) usually gives me more time. If I have to use reloads from the locals, I clean at more like 300-500 rounds...

Haven't been able to check prices here.
I only clean my guns if it's going to be in the safe for over a month and not get shot, or something like 1,500 rounds have been shot.

I can't feed my Para anymore
Price for .45 ACP is now officially out of my affordable range. At 35+tax per 100 or 23+tax per 50, I can't afford to feed it anymore unless for hunting. Since there is no handgun hunting in VA that I am aware of and there are laws against packing sidearms while hunting, Para P14-45 will be a safe queen starting today Sept. 02 2007 and will only emerge on special occasions such as Christmas, B-Days, D Day, 4th of July, Veteran Day, Memorial Day, and New Year.

Yep...Same here. The .40 was a little over 20.00 if I remember correctly.

A local shop has WWB for:
9mm 50rd (115gr FMJ) - $7.99 .40S&W 50rd (180gr FMJ) - $11.99 .45ACP 50rd (230gr FMJ) - $12.99 If shipping wouldn't be such a killer, I would organize a group buy and go buy them out... That probably wouldn't happen, though. They always have truckloads (actual truckloads) of WWB. |

About the only way around the high cost of factory ammo is to start reloading.
The price of components has gone up as well but its still much cheaper. A fairly inexpensive single stage press is just fine unless you are shooting very large numbers of rounds per outing and you can get into reloading at a reasonable cost if you select your equipment with some care. |
