SHTF ammo...alternatives??
I seem to be having a hard time fixing a phobia of mine, that I seem to always get "low" on ammunition for my "battle rifle" Bushy.
For several years now I've kept at least 500-1000rds of the military grade stuff...Lake City M193....or the Winchester (Israeli) equivalent....on hand in the ammo cans for "just in case". Sadly I took it for granted that the stuff would always be around for me to just bulk buy, whenever I ran out....now I'm at a crossroad. I'm tryin to figure out if I can do the "box a week" plan, by buying some at our local Wallyworld, but the selection is sad at best as usual. I've considered buying a case of some Wolf for plinkin, but should I buy something more suitable for SHTF situations by payin a buck or two more box at Walmart....instead of blowin money on the plinkin stuff....and go after stuff that's better, but still hard to come by. Question is what to get.....what to do....... Our Walmart only has a few maybe of the WWB 40rd value packs.....that's a real MAYBE....but did have several Remington white and green boxes....still almost $7 a box. I'm tryin to figure out what to do here.....I feel strange when I don't have some dependable shiney brass to mash into a mag if I need to.....but I don't like having any plinkin stuff to go out when I feel the need to. Either way I'm gonna be payin more, but don't know what I should be buyin first. I hope ya get my drift....it's hard to explain.

If I had to choose between "cheap plinking ammo" and " no ammo"....
HMmmm, I'm sure you can make the right choice.

buy whatever you can now.......it won't get any cheaper
Buy the Wolf, I've never had any trouble with it. Sure it may not fragment but I'd still wouldn;t want to be shot with it |

For me, it really boils down to having ammo or not. Sure if I had an endless supply of money, I'm buy cases & cases of a variety of ammo types. But I don't. So I have whatever is the best deal (cost / quality). Like others have said, I wouldn't want to get shot with a FMJ round or any other round. So having bullets is better than not having them...as long as they go bang when you pull the trigger and are reasonably accurate.

You can make your own decisions, but if it comes down to stopping a threat, I'd rather not be throwing FMJ rounds at it. Sure, I shoot FMJ all the time at the range and plinking (usually Winchester Target/Range or Blazer Brass - I'd avoid Wolf, the casings are steel and aren't very gun friendly). But when my gun is anywhere but the range, it's got jacketed hollow points loaded that are meant for stopping and incapacitating threats, rather than for poking holes in paper. In my case, my mag always is loaded with Winchester Black Talons.

Oh, and while I know money is the issue, it is rumored that there will be a general increase in ammo prices Sept. 1, so now might be a good time to get what you can.

Don't get me wrong, I've used Wolf and have had good luck with it....so it'd be fine for blastin paper, but do I save money on that and go ahead after some brass ammo....until Wolf is the only thing left?

It's not rumored... Walmart already has informed all of their sports department people to raise the price on September 1st... Go ask them. All gun shops say the same as well as all news papers. Quote:
