Proper Disposal

I was wondering is there any way of properly disposing of un-spent ammo. Not necessarily pistol ammo, I have several hundred shotgun shells that are unusable or I don't want to run through my gun. Can you just chunk them in the trash? And while I am at it, I have always wanted to tear apart on of my .40 HP's and just look at it, is it safe to pull the lead out w/wire pliers and go to looking?

Our local PD get's a lot of ammo this way. People donate it if the ammo is expired or such. The PD can then use it at the range or for qualification.

Might want to consider donating it if it's a usable caliber.

I've pulled bullet's out of the cartrige before (i wouldn't really recommend it). It's kind of nerve rackign at first. Don't put it in a vice or anything, you don't want to deform the primer. it is live ammo, anything can happen.

For the metallic cartridges, get a bullet puller. Looks like a big plastic hammer:

It holds the rim of the cartridge and lets inertia pull the bullet out. Doesnt damage the components at all (if you reload, you can use em over again). And it even works on big revolver rounds that are roll crimped to hell

As for the shotshells, no idea. Guess you could just get a scratch awl or a knife you dont care about and yank the crimp open.

ive got a handfull of pistol rounds where the index on my press was slightly off and the primers were either seated upside down, or seated sideways. Think using my bullet puller will still be safe with those?

Yes, you'll be fine. Primers are a bit more resilient than you'd think. I've decapped live primers and reused them

The above pictured puller is a VERY handy tool to have around the reloading bench.

A collet type puller will be alot friendlier if you have quite a few rounds to disassemble. Before I purchased a collet type, I did, in fact, use regular old fence pliers in conjunction with my press to disassemble large lots of rounds

The bad one I have I just chuck into the trash. If you have several hundred shot shells, you may want to cut the hulls open and save the lead or sell it to someone who casts their own bullets.
