.223 bullet shortage????

Ok, I don't know if this is true or not. With Canada and the US both at war overseas, there is a back-order from Hornaday for .223 FMJ bulk bullets.

I went to buy some from my guy and he said nobody is getting stock of .223 except for some uncommon weight varmit type hunting bullets.

He also mentions some larger city PD's are having to use .22LR kits and paintballs for training since they don't want to use up stock of duty rounds.

There might also be a shortage of .45ACP and 9mm according to my source.

I hope not. But good thing hadngun rounds can be cast.

Anybody else hear anything along those lines?

I ordered 240 rounds of Wolf .223. Yeah, I know......... It was back ordered for about a week but came shortly after my 1,000 rounds of Wolf .45 ACP did. I ordered from Sportsmans Guide.

The .223 is for my boy's NEF Handi-Rifle, so there is absolutely no problem with it using the steel cases. My XD seems to have "smoothed out" or something. I am getting close to 1,000 rounds with it and I think it's just getting broken in nicely. But, it seems to handle the steel cased .45s fine now.

Shortage or not, I got what I ordered within a week or so, so I can't complain too much. Just stocking up to do some coyote hunting this fall & winter, I hope.

Many tinfoil heads do not think there is a ammo shortage right now. The Whole sale dealers that sale mainly to Government agencies have been dried up on a lot of their common stuff since last fall.

My fear is they will start buying from the wholesale dealers that supply ammo to consumers. If this happens places like Wang-Mart, Natchez, Dicks, and Cabella will dry up fast.

This could drive up the market for imports like Wolf causing big price increases and a shortage.

Save your ammo and hang on for the ride. It may get real bumpy in the next two years.

hotpig hits it right on the nail. start dry-firing and cleaning instead of shooting and save your ammo. so unless you're hunting or home defense practice, don't waste your ammo.

by the way, i don't get the idea behind hunters having hard time getting by with high ammo price. i am a hunter and 1/3 of all people i know are hunters. we don't shoot that much annually as there are only so many tags allowed per year. i would say i go through 50 rds to sight-in and 5 for actual hunting each year. like what old schoolers always say "only shoot what you can hit & kill." high ammo price affect plinkers and self-defense shooters the most and LE the second. hunters are way on the bottom of the least because the ammo price is still very low comparing to the meat they gain.

It still trickles down to the hunters, it just takes a lot longer since their ammo is used much more sparingly than target or defense ammo.
I see guys post all of the time how come there is a shortage of 40 cal or 223 when the military is not using it. The same applies to the upper scale hunting ammo.
The mfg only make x amount of this hunting ammo on a production run since the market is so small compared to plinking ammo. They were busy last year filling US and NATO Contracts and did not make any or smaller amounts than normal. This year looks like the same scenario.
Now we are going through multiple seasons shooting the amount of ammo that was projected for one season. Supply and demand are going to bite the hunters eventually.

You simply can not find Federal Lake City M193 or Winchester Q3131 5.56 mm anywhere and even commercial .223 is very hard to get, not to mention expensive.

As a result, I have pretty much stopped shooting my ARs because I simply can not replace what I shoot. Not knowing how long this situation is going to continue, I need to save what I have.

I guess it depends on what you mean by bulk. In every case with bullet shopping, I have to browse several sources to find the bullet type & pricing that are actually available.

For .223, Wideners has 5,000 of the 55gr FMJBT in stock -

OK, I guess it's somewhat true. There was another post about Cops feeling the crunch of a shortage of .223

I'm not worried about .223 factory ammo as we can still get that, although there might be a price increase again.

My post was about .223 bullets, not ammo and any backorders in other areas the other users are in.

Again, the the 55gr FMJ's in particular. They have odd 64gr hollow point and spire tip and other varmit class bullets, just not the plain old FMJ's in bulk that we all use for target practice and competition.
