Ammo Legality

Greetings. This may have been beaten into the ground, but I did not find any results that were definite. I am assuming I will have to call LE in my area, but thought I would ask here as well.

I currently have Federal HS 124gr loaded in 9mm for home defense. I was looking into the Federal HST load. As far as having this ammo as a defense round in general, what is the LE only factor of this round?

I have not seen it mentioned that it is LE only ammo, but some may know different. Thank you for you replies.

LEO only ammo is just a company policy, not a law.

I have read that it has to do with the particular company that might have a contract to sell such ammo to LE departments and in some cases are "contracted" to sell this said ammo only to LE departments. It is NOT in violation to use or own this type ammo in the civilian field.

It is advertised as LE quality ammo. I haven't seen the LEO status.
I did speak with a gentleman about Win Rangers 127gr rounds, and he mentioned that it might be best to stick with OTC ammo that is readily available, and not use order off the web specialty rounds.

Depending on where you go, you can get the "Law Enforcement" ammo over the counter, so...

Again, it isn't an issue. If it is good enough for them, it's good enough got me.

I have a box of LE HST right here on my desk. It is fairly easy to get over the net and completely legal for anyone authorized to own handgun ammo.

The LE is a statement of the manufacturer's target market... not any provision of the law restricting ownership. You might find a disributor who is not willing to sell to any but the LE or military markets. But that is not a reflection of what the law provides. This type of ammo is not restricted.

i have ordered some HST's to see if the XD9 shots them as good as it shoots the Hydra-Shocks. To be honest I totally dig shooting Hydra-Shocks very, very accurate out of my gun.

Bree, I did try another box of DPX, and same result outta my gun. Spray!
they were all in black, but not good enough for me if I had a hostage situation. Thanks for recommending another try.

Good deal. They are deep penetrators and I don't think they are best for our purpose. But you checked em out carefully and now you know what you need to know to feel right about your ammo. So far my tests are coming along well and I have taken the EFMJ/HST route. I have some more tests planned but they may have to wait until I return from vacation.

I won't be carrying on vacation anyways since we intend to enter Canada. I think we will enter without showing our passports since if they swipe my passport in their machines I think the fact that I have a NY handgun carry permit will pop up and then we will get shaken down at the border for concealed weapons by the Canadian border guards. Not certain of that but I suspect it.
