Clairfication on LEO ammo for my state please.
Considering I do not know where to look for information regarding this, I thought I would ask. My friend was given a few black talons from a retired LEO and some other assorted ammo since he's in my friend's apartment complex. He talked with a LEO who is a friend of ours and he got very angry about the black talons and told him never to carry them again or he'll be arrested. So I had been reading that black talons were legal, but they just were not sold to civilians. But yet I've been told by person after person that they are indeed illegal to own. (One person tried to tell me that they'll defeat armor, but I laughed that off... Teflon does not make a bullet go through armor...) So here's the question... Are black talons, or any other LEO ammo, against the law to own in the state of Indiana? And oddly enough I just bought some 155gr winchester rangers at the gun store for $19. Aren't they suppose to be the next generation black talon? They look very similar.

I think you're okay.....that said, I'm sure that others on this forum are more knowledgeable on the topic. I bet Hotpig knows the answer. He's a good source for Talon/Ranger info.

Just another example of an uninformed police officer. They seem to give all the others a bad name.

Sadly, that police officer has the ability to arrest people for this.

I dont think the rangers are the next generation. I heard the Winchester SXT were supposed to stand for Same eXact Thing.

I do not know what your states laws are but WW Black Talons were NEVER made illegal to won by civilians. WW pulled the ammo because it got alot of neg. press. The current Ranger & SXT are basically the same thing w/o the black coating. Go onto your states DOJ site & review ammunition restrictions. Like krackles said, most LEO don't know swuat about firearms &/or ammo & that includes the laws. Still, why risk being detained by an uninformed LEO. There are many good JHP rounds that do the same thing.

Black Talons are perfectly legal for you to carry or use for HD.
However, if you shoot someone with your Black Talons, you will have to go into Civil and possibly Criminal court and articulate the reason why you felt it was necessary to use that ammo over all other brands of ammo available. If the prosecuting attorney knows anything about firearms, he could really put the squeeze on you. Why use a Black Talon when most any other high quality JHP will do about the same thing? For me, it's just not worth sitting on the stand and explaining why I had to use some "Cop Killers" (that's what the prosecutor will call them since that's what the media calls them) on an intruder. (The media also deems these as being able to penetrate bulletproof vests) Save yourself the headache and buy some Gold Dots, Golden Sabres, CorBon, or TAP JHP's.

A good rule of thumb is to use the same ammo your local PD usues. Then if you get a sleezy lawyer (I know, most are sleezy) then your repsonse is "If it's good enough for them to defend the public with, then it's good enough for me to defend my family with". That pretty much takes the crap out that argument.

As far as I know NJ is the only state that bans the use of Hollowpoints. I heard the leglislation was passed becuase of an episode of the "Sopranos".
Black Talons are NOT illegal (unless you live in NJ) and if the officer arrested you for it would be in a world of hurt if you choose to press the issue. That had to be some VERY mild steel for a pistol round to put a hole in it.
