9mm RN, FP, or JHP For Comps

I know some of you guys use HP for matches but is there any benefit to a FP and JHP over a RN?

It seems that FPs and HPs are typically more money.

I think I like 124s overall for plinking and matches so I want to order bulk but have never tried Rainier or Berries FPs and HPs in my XD9.

my personal choice is to use round nose for all comp. the reason i do this is because in general RNs are less suseptable to jamming. although all my bullets are cast lead. i have used the reasonably priced copper plated bullets (round nose)made by frontier with GREAT results

I guessed that the RN were to help with feeding.

Are you shooting an XD9?

I loaded some 9mm 125 LRN and they were horrendous.

I wonder if I need to seat them a bit shorter.

My XD9 has shot the following without any feed issues.

FP Rainier
124gr 15 rounds (same profile as 147gr)
147gr 3892 rounds

FP Moly Coated Lead Precision Bullets
125gr 149 rounds
147gr 436 rounds

I set my oal for 1.142 and use N320 powder.

Although both are FP type bullets, the Rainier has a smaller flat area and may help if you are experiencing feed problems.

The lead bullets are smoky and I may return back to Rainiers because of that. They're cheaper but I don't care for the smoke. Maybe a slower burning powder would help but I like the N320.

thanks

I have never had a feed issue with my 147 FP Rainiers either.

I just wanted to check before I purchased a large amount of 124s.

I've been shooting Ranier and Zero 115 FMJs in matches. I think I'm up to my 5th match. My first match was with my XDSC. The rest were with my Beretta 92. No failures at all. I also shoot them for just range ammo and again no problems.

My loads -
Ranier or Zero 115 gr FMJ
Powder is HS-6 (6.8 gr)
Primer is Winchester WSP
OAL ~1.150 (approximately meaning that I've tried slightly longer 1.159 and slightly shorter 1.144 too, and no problems with any of these).
Medium Crimp...sorry don't recall the measurements. I use Lee Factory Crimp and adjust it for halfway between light & heavy crimp.

FYI Rainiers are plated and not jacketed.

I don't see a huge gain by using just FMJs exclusively.

The Rainier 115s shot awesome in my XD too.

According to their ad, they are "copper jacketed" rounds??? Since the bullet is fully encased in copper, I thought that's what an FMJ round was...a lead core fully encased in copper. I think you're right...I'm just not sure what I'm missing with respect to the difference. Ranier's website cites them as TJC=total jacketed copper. Cabelas, which sells Raniers, cites them as copper jacketed. Midway cites them as plated with a lead core. So what's the difference between their rounds and an FMJ round?

With respect exclusively shooting FMJs, I've shot others...just not in matches. For the matches, I was looking for low cost, good accuracy, and high reliability. So far, the rounds that I mentioned have worked well.

I used the LFP bullets for the last action pistol competition I was in. I had no problems whatsoever, and the flat points make nice clean holes in the targets (not like the FMJ pushed through holes).

I too prefer the cleaner holes made by the FP.
