XD 9mm w/Corbon DPX result

I went today and shot a few boxes of DPX 115gr, 124 Federal Hydra-Shock, and 147 Rem Golden Sabers.
My findings were that the DPX was very erratic. Even when using a rest at 7 yards. I wonder if it is because the XD 9 is light and the round is HOT!

The Federal Hydra-Shock 124 grain shot a really nice 1/2 dollar size group at 7 yards.

The Rem Golden Sabers 147 grain shot the same as the Federal.

Why do you think the DPX was so erratic? I am not a ballistics expert by no means, but I would like to get some opinions.

Thanks.

Chances are it is not the ammo.

In most cases it is the person pulling the trigger that cause the erratic groupings.

that is easily said.

being that i shot tight groups with other ammo, i would not think that it's the case of the shooter.

with that out of the way, do you have any other advice on how hot rounds fly compared to standard pressure?

It could be you anticipating more recoil/muzzle blast from the hotter loads, that could cause the erratic groupings.

agreed.

but i was shooting from a rest.

i guess i will spend some more cash, and do another test. for now, it is federal 124 or remington 147 on the carry.
i will have to save up to do another test shoot.

:EDIT:
what is with the theory that the gun likes a particular ammo?

Different weapons (even of the same make) preferring different ammo is not unusual.

Example...I've owned several G19s.
When shooting CorBon 115gr JHP, one of the Glocks wouldn't get through a mag of CB without choking. However, the same Glock NEVER jammed with anything else.
Was it a bad gun? Nope, it just didn't like CorBon (probably that cartridge's short OAL).
Same thing can happen with accuracy.

Sometimes gun and ammo matching is a bit of Voodoo and cannot be explained.
That is why a wise man will always test a specific ammo to a specific gun before relying on that combo.

My two favorite 9mm defense rounds are (in order)...
Win Ranger-T 147gr
Win Ranger-T 124gr+P
All things being equal, my "go to" load is the 147gr because it still has great performance with less recoil, but if I happen to get a 9mm that shoots the 124gr+P better, that's what I'll use.

When in the firing sequence did you shoot the DPX? Sometimes after firing a bunch of powerful rounds you get shaky. Don't know why but it happens to me now and then. Usually my first rounds are spot on. But after some high recoil rounds maybe the hand gets gunshy for awhile.

Bree, I shot them in this order.

1. DPX (not to good)
2. Hydra Shock (nice shots)
3. Golden Sabers (excellent, as well!)
4. back to the DPX rounds. I had to try them again since I shot bad with them, and then good with the others. It was the same result as the first round.

TN-PoPo,
Thanks for the info. I live in AR, grew up in West AR, Mempho, TN.
I started to purchase some Rangers to try them, but had a conversation with an AR State Patrol Officer. He was saying that it would be better to shoot the OTC rounds and not the Rangers. If something came up in Court one day (Please, I would hope not, but..), he was saying that it might hold up that I wasn't using LEO ammo. (all hear say, I guess?) <--This seems to have been beaten into the ground-->
P.S.
TN-PoPo, what's up with the crazy crime in Memphis and Nashville this year?

It could be
bullet diameter (very slight difference)
OAL length (jump to lands)
too fast or slow of powder
hot primers

There are so many variables, its really hard to say. .22 caliber guns will point out the biggest variances you ever saw. I shot a forum members .22 target rifle the other day and put 2 groups in the paper the size of my pinky nail. We changed ammo and it opened up almost an inch!
My own .22 rifles are the same.

My varmint rifle gets fed handloads. I can change brands of bullets and the groups will go from under .500 at 100 yards to almost an inch. Same goes with changing the seating depth of the bullet by several thousandths.

Find what it likes and stick with it, dont worry so much about why.

Bad batch of ammo. Try another box. The DPX I shot this weekend weren't bad as far as accuracy goes. Keep positivity high and believe... This IS good ammo!! This IS good ammo!! This IS good ammo!!
