Cool Competitive Shooting

I have recently joined a range that teachs shooting technquies. Once I get the fundamentals down then I will move on to competitive shooting. Fundamentals are the frame work on which all other skills are built upon. I learned that in my martial arts class

Big +1 on that. Too many guys poopoo target shooting. Learning to shoot tight groups teaches you trigger & sights. Then it's time to move on to speed drills, drawing from concealment, etc.

And I love the "assault a postition", that is so perfect.
It seems that's what many CCW guys are planning when they carry 50rds & a backup. Your CCW is to keep/get you out of harms way not to press an attack. If your BG isn't down or running away in the first 3-4sec. something is very wrong w/ your shooting or tactics. Unlike LEO, you are not required to press an attack to it's end. You can shoot & scoot, live to fight another day. The longer you stay in a protracted fight, the more likely you'll take a stray round or get outflanked or ambushed by someone else. You have no vest, no radio, no backup coming, why would you want to stay on the street, in a store, etc & keep fighting?
While I have carried w/o a a spare mag. it makes me feel awkward, like driving w/o my spare tire!

When I CCW, I carry one spare mag of seven .45 rounds.

For an average CCW person, the possibility of getting into lengthy and protracted gun battle is slim. Most criminals are opportunists who would rather retreat to live another day (in order to pick on someone else!) rather than engage in gun battle. Beside the increased risk of getting shot, the longer the bad guys engage in the gun fight, the more likely they draw attention and eventually a swarm of cops on the scene. That's why we hear so many stories about bad guys turning around and running at the sight of their would be victims drawing weapons, but hardly any about a protracted gun battle between the bad guy and the CCW holder.

Arrow Ccw

I understand this is a gun forum, but I think the best weapon I have is on my shoulder. If I stay alert to the people around me, where I am and what is going on around me I stand a good chance of never having to use a weapon.
If I do have to use my CCW then I am going to depend on my weapon to work, because I have bought a really reliable weapon (XD-45ACP). Know the ammo in my weapon works as well as possible in my weapon and that I have maintained that weapon appropriately.
Lastly, my main purpose for carrying a weapon is to defend me and my family. Which means I do not want to be in a gun fight any longer than possible. So if the BG doesnt leave, I will be withdrawing from the fight as fast as possible while calling LEOs. Like someone posted previously, I do not have the equipment, time or desire to participate in a long gun fight.

I have a question. Rather than carrying a spare mag on your person, if you keep a mag (or speedloader for revolver) in your car, is that safe?

I mean, in the summer with the heat, is their any danger of the rounds deforming or any other undesirable effects?

IT has to get REAL hot for a round to randomly go off. The only way the round would "deform" is if your car is on fire in wich case a deformed round and melted mag is the least of your worries.

I will say this it's not doing a whole lot of good in your car if you happen to need it. Other than acting as a paper weight in your glovebox.

Yep, jeep beat me to that one. Keeping a spare mag in your car is like keeping your pistol in the car; how is that going to help you. If you can get to your car, you can drive away from the threat or run it over.

that's true guys. I'd want the spares in the car just so they're always with me. In case I wanted to walk away from the car with a spare in a particular situation.

When I carry my XD9mm I used to carry just one magazine figuring 17 rounds is plenty to take care of an attacker, but I've had a change of heart.

Now that I'm carrying my 1911. I carry 8+1 and a spare magazine.

I actually started carrying a spare in my car.

Wonder what the jiffy lube guys thought last friday when I got an oil change. I totally forgot about it.
