Nice bench, I have to build a new one soon myself. I have outgrown mine and its really not near as sturdy as I need. Ill take some of your ideas and add some of my own.
Thanks
I hope the pics can serve you well enough to be able to use them for your own ideas.

It's an 8 foot by 30 inch bench. It doesn't move at all, so I think I'm good to go.

You engineers are always over engineering you engineering projects. j/k.
It's not about load, it's about stability. Repeated side to side (front and back, etc.) pressure can eventually enlarge the holes made by screws and nails. The gussets provide leverage to help fight that motion. The 2x10 back and side boards should be wide enough to provide the same effect.

Nice job! One suggestion for you; If there's not one there yet (can't see one in the picture) add a 1x4 or 2x4 under the center of the counter. Use screws to fasten it to the 2x4 & 2x10's. That will help keep all of the boards level with each other. Without it you might get more sag in the front board vs the next one in, making your counter uneven.

Another idea for you; countersink the bolt heads and get a piece of plywood or a pre-cut laminate counter to cover the top. I'd think a smooth top would be easier to keep clean. Also add a back splash to keep stuff from rolling off the back (and down behind all of the stuff you will store under the bench ).

I will add a shelf to the bottom, a sheet of 3/4 plywood to the top (over the 2x10's and put on a lip around all 4 sides so nothing rolls off.

Good suggestions, guys. I thought about countersinking the screw heads, but decided not to. Eventually I will add a peg board on the back, and that will double as a back splash. The front and sides,.........I think I will have to work with a while before I get a feel for what I want to add as a "keeper".

I never thoguth about adding a support under the 2X10's to keep it from warping unevenly board to board. I may do just that very shortly.

For now, I will go with plain jane and work my way from there. I am VERY picky about my work space. So, any addtions will probably not be a quick, hasty add-on.

Lol, I almost always use screws when building stuff. It makes it a lot easer to tear apart after I make a mistake (not when or if... )
