9mm or 40 that is the question..

Having never fired a 40 cal I have nothing to base my decision on. I see a lot of xd 40 owners here.

Could anyone chime in as to why you chose your particular weapon? I'd really like to hear from folks who have shot/owned both.

I've been looking here http://ammoman.com/index.htm at ammo and I'm planning to get some of the fmj expanding loads federal makes for defense and something cheaper for target. I'd say on average there is about a $.06 difference between the two sizes and the 40 has a decent increase in power.

As far as use, I doubt I will carry. It will be mostly home defense and target shooting (for fun).

I'm leaning towards the 9mm due to cost per round and also I think I like the light recoil. As I said I've never fired the 40 so I don't know how much more recoil there is.

I'll be getting a 4" model.

Thanks

Todd

Originally I was going to get a 40 but when it came time to buy I had the $$$ but the store only had the 9mm Service in stock. I thought about it and decided to go ahead and get the 9mm mainly for ammo cost so I could practice more frequently at the range.

Now that I've shot over 2000 rounds through her and even carry occasionally with no problems whatsoever I feel I made the right decision. I have no doubt that my 9mm gold dots would be more than adequate for stopping someone.

I already had a 9mm that's why I got a XD-40. As far as recoil I think the .40 is a bit snappier. If I had to chose just one caliber I would go with 9mm, cheaper to shoot and I would trust my life on the caliber.

If this is primarily going to be used as a range-gun or home defense weapon, I'd just go with 9mm due to cost of ammo. You'll be able to buy a lot more ammo for it which equates to shooting it more. I've got an XD40 that I bought because I wanted a 40 and didn't own one yet.

I went with 40 because it is a good middle round, its smaller than the .45 with similar characteristics as the 9mm. I also have always liked the "Bigger is Better".The only reason I didnt go with a 45 is I am planning on getting a 1911.

This could go on forever, I've got a 40 & 45. Personally I prefer to put the bigger hole in someone if it came to that.

Between the 9, 40 and 45; each are going to have their pros and cons in relation to each other. It really just boils down to personal preference.

yeah I know. the road block I'm having is the inability to develop my own preference in my area. We don't have rental ranges and such here.

Fo-ty!

I picked it ( XDService in 40SW) for the middle of the road factor, and I didn't have a .40SW yet, and I had two other 9mm's already.
It's definitely a little snappier than a 9mm, but I dig that!
The ammo cost difference isn't that great a factor.
If it's just a home gun, I'd opt for the 40SW.

That said, my next purchase will either be the Tactical or SC 9mm, or both.
I carry a KahrP9, in case you wanted to know

Damn gun disease.
