Question Thoughts on this 9mm reload and question.

Working on reloads for 9mm .. here is what I have so far and the results.
  • Hodgon CLAY powder using 3.5 Grains (burns fairly clean)
  • CCI SP Primer
  • Mixed Brass
  • Winchester FMJ FB 115 Grain
  • OAL 1.105”
  • Moderate Crimp with Lee Factory Crimp Die
“Seems” to be shooting OK .. groups at 7 to 10 yards (Thinking IDPA ranges) are not bad going by MY shooting ability.
Problem I am having is with a few Stove Pipes here and there … not good for IDPA shooting. Also, several last rounds fail to lock the slide back / open on the last round.
Suggestions please. I am at the point where I could try a different powder if you know one that would be better for 9mm. Better suited for XD’s ??? Need more "Ommmph " ??
From the data I have .. going over 3.5 grains of powder would be “pushing” it ???
Any and all help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would really like to get a good solid round to practice with and take to the IDPA events to use.
Thanks in advance for your time and thoughts.

Gordon in Greensboro

I think 115gr may be too light for Clays. I prefer a 147gr over 3.2 grains of TiteGroup.

In the end, if it runs in your gun and your are within pressure limits, go with it.

I've tried Clays & just don't like it much for 9mm or 45acp. It seems finicky to me. Your load is a bit light, you could bump to 3.8gr. I prefer several other powders but hard to beat WST for light loads in most pistol rounds.

I would increase the OAL alittle to maybe 1.125 or so.

Hodgdon's recommends 3.7 - 3.9 grains of Clays over a 115 jacketed bullet. (3.0 - 3.4 for 115 lead) I would bump your load up a little and lengthen the OAL. I prefer 3.7 grains (when using clays) and an OAL 1.155 with a FMJ bullet. Works well in my XD.

If you're looking for a new powder, I actually prefer Titegroup in the 9mm

What are some of your TG loads?

I usually load to about 40-50 fps over pf.

My 115 loads are usually 4.3-4.5 with an OAL of 1.13.

I too prefer TiteGroup over Clays, I just don't get consistant results with Clays. It sounds like your load is too light for the spring you are using. Without a Chrono it is hard to tell what is going on but you can try increasing the powder a little at a time until the problem goes away.

I prefer the 124 FMJ over 4.2 Titegroup w/OAL 1.155 in the XD. Very clean and reliable with solid ejection. I use 4.4 if I want a little extra oomph for a couple of older autos with heavier slides than the XD.

115 FMJ over 4.4 Titegroup w/OAL 1.155. Feels like the 124's loaded at 4.2.

I load 115 grain Precision Bullets with 4.1 grains of Titegroup with an OAL of 1.100" and I've seen good results.
