stockpiling FMJ or JHP?
Im sure many of us here stockpile ammo.
I personally have 650 rounds of .45ACP 230 grain FMJ & 50 rounds or so of JHP. and almost 1000 rounds of .22lr Soon after I get my rifle .308 will be on the menu. I'm bored and curious.

Magtech was on sale recently so I bought 2500 rounds in .45 and 1000 in 9mm and .40.
When the .223 and 7.62 goes on sale, I'll buy up a ton as well.

I have been stockpiling 5.56 mm for some time as it has become very hard to get and when you do find it, very expensive. The inability of acquiring 5.56 mm has cut back on my shooting with my various AR-15 to a degree as I for the most part, can’t replace what I shoot. I have made an effort to leave my Lake City M193, M855, and Winchester Q3131 supplies alone as NATO Spec ammo is almost impossible to find now.
As far as the pistol ammo goes, I have a good stockpile of factory ammo for carry but I utilize my reloads for practice. Even so, the price of reloading components has gone up substantially over the past couple of years and I have tried to stockpile components as well. With the future for us shooters very much in question come 2008 and beyond, I believe it’s prudent to lay back stocks of not only ammo, but high capacity magazines for all your firearms as well as the necessary spare parts to keep them up and running. I see the storm clouds forming. |

M855: 62gr FMJBT Ball, green-painted tip. This cartridge is intended for use against personnel, unarmored and light armored targets from 5.56×45mm weapons with a 1-in-10-inch (1:10) or faster rifling twist (Machine guns: M249 Minimi; Rifles: M16A2 and other compatible systems). The M855 cartridge is based on the FN-designed SS-109 bullet, and has a gilding metal-jacketed, lead alloy core bullet with a steel penetrator. The primer and case are waterproof. It was adopted by NATO in 1980 as the standard small arms ammunition for NATO forces. Its ballistic coefficient is typically 304. AP means Anti Personnel, not Armor Piercing. Only M995 is armor piercing, and it comes ONLY on special issue SAW belts, never loose nor de-milled http://www.ammo-oracle.com/body.htm Q. Where can I get some M995 AP? Unless you are in the military, you probably can't. This ammo is a fairly new item that is rare even in the military, as it is considered a "special issue" item. It is illegal for licensed dealers to sell AP ammo (except M2) to civilians and no components are available for reloading. It will probably be many years before any M995 ammo is "demil'ed" (demilitarized, meaning disassembled) and components released. That's assuming AP bullets are still legal to possess as components at that time. Be careful of scams. One of the authors has personally seen vendors selling Bosnian SS-109 ammo, which uses black tips instead of the more common green, as "armor piercing", implying that it is M995. It isn't. Another vendor was selling stripper clips (10 rounds) of US-made M855 with black-painted tips (likely painted by the vendor himself) for $5/clip. This vendor also heavily implies that this is M995, though I don't believe either vendor is familiar with that designation. Be very careful before spending your hard-earned cash...

Storm clouds are forming on the regulation of firearms and ammunition. 2008 and beyond will bring changes for all gun owners no matter what party grabs power, and what the mandate (if there is one) to govern happens to be.
With this in mind - START WITH THIS (I am almost there) 3 High-Cap mags min. for every pistol and rifle 1,000 rounds of all ammo in each caliber 5,000 rounds if you happen to have .22LR Spare parts for your primary pistol, long rifle and shotgun And enough extra ammo to barter with, if things get ugly. And if you never "need it"...great! You can shoot it all at the range of your choice during your happy retirement, without having to stop at a store that may, by then, be tracking every ammo purchase with ID-required! |

I'm stocking up on components. All shooter should become handloaders as well. You can stockpile 3x the components as loaded ammo in space & cost.
