Taking the plunge...

I finally decided to take the plunge and give reloading a try.. BUT I went the hard route.. I enjoy tinkering, so I bought the most time wasting method possible.... I will be learning on a lee classic loader...

I ordered a 9MM and a .45 kit.. I already have a hammer..

My guess is that after a few hundred rounds with the lee loader, you'll buy a set of dies and at least a single stage press. You (or others in your household) will go bonkers with all that hammer banging going on.

I am guessing that after 10 minutes you'll take one dose of "Fukidol" and pitch it. Once you consider your time and energy, you will quickly see how this is not much fun for bulk range ammo. Precision Rifle where you may need 50 rounds or so, OK. 9x19 and 45ACP- I will pray for you.

I wish its only an IBM AT with a single floppy.. And do they make a 300 baud now??

If it helps, I also ordered a primer pocket cleaning tool and a copy of "ABCs of Reloading.."

Good luck on your reloading project.

I bought a lee load master for 80 bucks from a friend who couldn't get it work right a while back. I'm using it for .223 and .308 with no problems, I also have a Lee Pro Loader for the 9mm, .40, .38, and .44. As you can see I really like lee products. I'm looking into gettin some 9mm and .40 bullet molds next.

As a newbie reloader myself, I spent a countless amount time researching and learning about this "hobby." So far I've reloaded about 1000 45acp since getting my dillon 650 setup last week. At first I was going to get the lee classic turret system. I even watched the video on their website and thought the reloading process was cool on the lee turret press. Well, after using my 650 for about a week, I went back and watched that lee turret press video again. I said to myself, "OMG, what a chore it is to load a single cartridge with that machine." The guy in the video had to press the handle up and down about 4-5 times to make one cartridge. And he had to click in the primer separately. Imagine if you're bulk loading for target practice. 1000 cartridges would mean you have to pull the thing 4000 to 5000 times.

I'm writing this not to criticize your decision. I'm sure you'll be very happy with your machine. Just like you, I like to tinker with things and find out how they work. But I decided on the faster progressive machine because I realize that reloading can be fun and rewarding, but I didn't want it to become a chore. If so, I'd get bored and would stop doing it.

If you decided to load small amounts of ammo, such as for benchrest shooting then high/fast ammo production doesn't matter and in this case the turret press would be a good option IMHO. Also, I'm not saying Dillon is the best just because I use their products. Lee also makes a good progressive press.

Good luck and have fun

Damn

I hope you used a chrono before mass producing.

My 650 should be here on Friday but I am going to take it very slow until I feel comfortable with the charges and process.

Of course I also have 10 different bullets with 3 different types of powder to try out.

I've reloaded thousands of rounds over a period of over 25 years and have never used a chrono.
