Reloading...

Greetings,

I am looking at beginning to reload my ammos. especially my .45 ACP.

For those of you who reload, what and where exactly do you buy and what is the price? I took a look at a few places and it is almost the same price than what I would pay at wally... I am sure I must have something wrong:

For qty 1000
- CCI primers 25$
- Winchester bulk bullets 110$
powder 8 pounds 169$ ( I have no idea how much ammo you do with 8 pounds...hehehehe)

That makes 304$ for 1000 rounds + the press I would have to buy + my time. I am sure I am wrong somewhere...

At wally, 100 .45ACP winchester is about 30$.

Thank you

I will muster up some links for you.
8# of powder will make about 10000 rounds

The primers price seems just a tad high compared to what I pay, but not too far out of line.

Bulk bullets come in many flavors. I haven't purchased any for a while, but think the last batch I bought were around $60-70 per 1000. You get what you pay for here though

Get powder by the 1# jug at first. I pay ~$17/pound and ~$114/8 pounds locally, so shop a little harder there for sure.

BTW, there are 7000 grains in 1 pound of powder. Depending on what powder you select, and using 4-7 grains per .45acp round, thats 1750-1000 rounds per pound!!

First here is a cost calculator http://www.handloads.com/calc/loadingCosts.asp

Bullets precision moly coated are the best value less lead than cast and cheaper than plated/jackted http://www.precisionbullets.com/

I buy primers and powder locally to avoid the 25 dollar has mat.
Tite group is good and can be had every where for about 15/pound

Primers are increasing nearly daily I bought a few 1000 for 17 last year same place are 23 now.

http://www.brianenos.com/
I have a 550 b and it's great or on a smaller budget the Sqaure deal be is fully progressive for 320 ish and comes with die.But will never do rifle.

I DO NOT SAVE ANY MONEY BUT I DO SHOOT TWICE AS MUCH FOR THE SAME COST

Have you tried the search button yet?
Here are enough threads to get you started, if you need more, just pm and I;ll run another search.
This is a sticky:
Getting Started Reloading

This is what I got off the search feature
Reloading, is it really cost effective?
Where do you buy your bullets(Non loaded)
Reloading - best method for buying components?
How many times do you use your brass??

Using lead bullets the total costs are about 10 cents per round based on your costs. Store bought ammo is now running about 30 cents per round in .45 acp when bought as boxes of 50.

A decent starter press (Lee Classic Cast Turret) with dies, scale, powder measure and calipers will set you back another 200 bucks shipped if you know where to look. The loading rate is about 250 rounds per hour with that setup. Be sure to use CCI primers though, for safety reasons. If you pay attention and seat them properly, and your XD is properly cared for, you will not have any problems setting these primers off.

After your first 1000 - 1500 rounds the equipment is pretty much paid for.

Now, more than ever, reloading makes sense.

Have you noticed any more smoke when using these?

In the article the writer mentions that he won't use these in comps because in certain light there is more visible smoke.

Thumbs up

I'm not sure what powder you bought, but assuming 5gr/rd, you are getting about 11000/8#. Your cost, w/ the componets you stated, would be $15/100, about 1/2 of factory. Buy bullets & primers in bulk to save more. Plated are cheaper than jacketed & lead cheaper than plated. You can get down to 8c/rd or $8/100, it pretty much pays for the equip., even higher end stuff like a Dillon, in short order.

Very little if any.
I have herd that slower powder produce less but I have yet to have any issues.
I did try some masterblaster moly or poly coated and ended up with some smoke and build up.

I am new to pricing out reloading components so bear with me.

How large is the cost savings of using the black bullets as opposed to a jacketed one?
