.357sig Defense!
I have a few autopistols in .357sig. I'm having a hard time finding defensive JHP for it. My other handguns go with Gold Dot, CorBon, or Ranger Talons. I have CorBon in them now and they function great, but I'd prefer a heavier bullet
I'd like to find a 147g .357sig JHP. I could live with 124g, but I like a heavy bullet. Anyways, if anyone knows of a manufacturer that make the 147g, please let me know so I can test them at the range. |

Not trying to be argumentative, but the Secret Service, texas state troopers, and pretty much everyone else that carries 357 Sig carries the 125 grain bullet. It is what the caliber is designed around. If you want a 150 grain bullet, why not go to 40? 125 grain penetrates well (without overpenetrating) expands well, and is reliable and accurate.

All that you can depend on from a 45 is that it will drill a .45 - .70 inch hole about 14 inches into someone. There will not be "energy dump", people will not fly backwards, and they will not necessarily fall as if they have been struck by lighting. |

The only company that I know of that stocks (or even makes) a 147 grain .357 SIG is Double Tap. They use Gold Dots.

Because I am not a SS agent or a state trooper and some of the SS actually carries the 5.7 now. The .357sig was actually designed around the 158g .357 magnum. I'm asking for help regarding what I WANT! I was very specific in my first post to prevent opinionated arguments such as this. I don't want a .40, I've sold every .40 I have ever owned. I have a post in the forums for 500 rounds of .40 ammo for sale. This thread is not about overpenetration or expansion, it's about finding a particular load. If you don't know the answer to my question, then don't post. Thank you Tengu, that's what I was looking for. |

Fine. Just asking... Who pissed in your corn flakes? Dude, its a discussion board, take a deep breath. I was asking because occasionaly people assume that heavier is better. Some folks want 45 ACP heavier then 230 grains with the idea that heavier must be better. I have been shooting 357 sig since it was introduced, have worn out 2 357 sig pistols, and have been consulted to one of the major companies about improvements needed in their guns. It is actually one of the only calibers I know a bunch about. Hence the question.
That said, if you want heavy rounds you can also get Hornady at 147 grains. SandB also makes a ball round that is also around that heavy. Have a happy Saturday.

I'm not sure your info on the .357sig is correct. The original design concept was to reproduce the 357magnum perf. in a semiauto. The "Stopping power" legend of the .357mag was made w/ a 125grJHP @ 1450fps from a 4" bbl. THis is prety much what the designers came up with. THere is a point in going to a 147grJHP though, increased exapansion & penetration. Hornady makes a load: https://www.hornady.com/shop/?ps_ses...6e795f962c6f79 as well as DoubleTap. http://www.doubletapammo.com/php/cat...roducts_id=125
Sellor & Bellot makes a 140gr FMJ. Last edited by fredj338; 04-28-2007 at 09:53 PM. |

His information on the 158 grain 357 Magnum/357 sig is incorrect. But don't argue with him, he is not into contrary opinions. You are correct, it was made to closely resemble the 357 mag, but it is actually a 355 bullet.

357 SIG was originally designed to replicate the 125gr 357mag load from a 4in revolver.
SIG Arms in partnership with Federal Cartridge, developed the 357 SIG cartridge in 1994. Contrary to popular belief, the 357 SIG cartridge is not a .40 S&W case necked down to accept .355 inch bullets. Forming brass for the 357 SIG in this way is dangerous, leading to case ruptures due to generated pressures much higher than those the .40 S&W case was designed for. Instead the 357 SIG round uses thicker brass than the .40 S&W casing to cope with the higher pressures caused by the neck of the casing. Allegedly, SIG shied away from calling its new cartridge a nine-millimeter-anything for fear of public rejection of the round. Instead, it was dubbed a "357" in order to highlight its purpose: to duplicate the performance of 125-grain .357 Magnum loads fired from 4-inch barrelled revolvers, except in a cartridge designed to be used expressly in an auto-loading pistol.

Makes you wonder what the adoption would have been if they had called it a 9mm Magnum. Either way I'm happy with 357 SIG its a great round and is the primary HD/CCW caliber.
