Primer / Powder Questions

As my reloading stuff is arriving, I went out & got some primers & powders.

For my Enfield .303:
Powder Hodgdon H335
Primer CCI BR-2 Bench Rest Primers Large Rifle (part#0010)

For my AR (.223):
Same power as above
Primer CCI Small Rifle (part#0013)

For my 9mm:
Powder Hodgdon HS-6
Primer CCI Small Pistol (part#0014)

From the reloading manual and other sources, I think the powders are a good start. I'll see how well they work for me.

But the primers have me scratching my head. The manual & CCI website weren't real clear to me. For the .303brit, it looks like the BR-2 are more precision primers...but I have no idea what that means. Did I buy the right thing?

For the AR, it looks like CCI sells a military primer. Unfortunately Bass Pro Shop didn't carry them. Is the standard small rifle primer okay?

Thanks!

Standard small rifle primers are all I use for my .223. I prefer winchester over cci just personal choice. BR primers are for benchrest guns "high accuracy" stuff I wouldn't spend more money on them just use large rifle primers.

Great! Thanks for quick feedback. The BR-2s were the only large rifle primers they had and of course since I'm like a little kid, I couldn't wait! The last of my equipment should arrive tomorrow. Next time, I'll visit another shop near my work and get the standard large rifle primers instead.

+1 Some will say you need the military primers (harder) for the AR due to the free floating firing pin and the risk of slam fires, but most including me use standard and have never had a problem.

When I eventually start loading for my SKS, I will use military because I have had some slam fire issues. But over 1,000 rounds already loaded and fired through the AR with no issues.

I like the H335. Consistent and clean. I have more recently come to like Viht
N135 for the AR. My AR is a heavy barrel NM so that may be a factor. My switch to CCI BR primers and N135 really tightened up the groups with 77 Gr Hornady and Sierra 69 Gr. match bullets. your mileage may vary. OAL 2.260.

No cure for Black Rifle fever!

Compass Lake Match Service Rifle
Douglas 1/8 Stainless barrel
1/4 NM sights
Frank White 2 stage match trigger
