Lee Progressive 1000 vs. Dillon RL 550B
Is the Dillon really that much better than the Lee? Are all progressive presses created equally? I've been trying to buy a Dillon at my local store but seems like I'm getting the run around. I can go get the Lee in the morning and not get the run around at a different store. But, if the Dillon is superior I will continue to wait. Please advise!

I don't think anyone would say the Dillon is not superior, costing 3 times as much. If I had the money and would be doing a lot of ammo I would definitely go with the Dillon. You are comparing presses though that are in greatly different price ranges though, the dillon being about 3 times as much as the lee. I'm not saying it's not worth the difference, but the lee loadmaster is closer to the dillon than the pro 1000 and in fact even then it's closer to the square deal b than the 550b (in price). You will probably spend even more on the dillon for accessories. Again, I'm not saying it's not worth it but just pointing out the differences in prices. If I was going to load a lot and had the money I think the dillon would probably be a good lifetime press press. If you have the money to spend on the Dillon and do not get it you will probably regret it later on.

You're comparing a Miata to a Corvette

Get a Dillion from Brian Enos http://www.brianenos.com/store/dillon.550.html
Great service, and it will all be shipped to you direct from Dillon with free shipping and will only take a few days to get it. I got mine in December and I love it.

There's no doubt that the Dillon is a great press, but for the money I can wear out 3 pro 1000's for the price of a Dillon. I use the Lee press and have loaded 1000's of rounds with it and no problems. If you have the budget to get the Dillon then go for it. It's just a matter of what you can afford.

It's not a matter of cost, it's a matter of my impatience. I'm not someone who waits real well at all! The story is lengthy but here we go: Wife and I go to the range/gun shop last Saturday (3/31) to pop off some rounds and buy the press, dies, media, powder etc... When we finished shooting I came out and told the "guy" (great people that I don't really want to make their name public) that I was going to buy the RL550B and the necessary other stuff. He said great but he would have to order the dies and they should arrive Thu. (4/5) or Fri. (4/6). No problem, I told him I would give him a call Fri. (4/6) to arrange a time where we could spend some time setting the press up and go over the operation of it. So, I called Fri. (4/6) and he acted like he didn't even know what I was talking about. Apparently he forgot to order the dies and blamed the poor service on Dillon rather than his forgetfullness. So now, I have to wait another week for the dies to come in. Three weeks I will have invested in this ordeal when it should have been a simple matter.

I like the Lee, but then I like to tinker. It takes a while to understand the simplicity of the Lee products. You need patience to develop good loads, but the Lee will deliver. It helps to get and read both the instructions and Richard's inexpensive book.
The Dillon has to be good, otherwise the shooters who need lots of ammo wouldn't buy them. I particularly like to read their Blue Press. |
