Too much crimp?

My feeble search skill didn't help so I turn to you fabulous peoples.

I just started re-loading, and am using the factory crimp die from Lee. My question is, Is it possible to have too much crimp? If there is such a thing, what is the issue/what would happen? I know if you don't crimp enough, the ammo won't feed (correct me if I'm wrong here). My OAL is 1.56 to 1.6 depending on my fiddling. I have yet to fire any of the small batch of ammo I have made, until I learn more about this whole reloading thing. Last thing I need is to blow off a finger.

Thanks in advance,
xoxo

Get the speer reloading manual. It's great. No questions after that, other than for pet loads.

If you notice non round holes in your target, its a preyy good sign your overcrimping and the bullets are tumbling. Crim just enough to hold the bullet securely, just where it imprints the bullet jacket.

Crimp....

Does it not vary greatly depending upon the type of round you are loading?

Well, on my .44 mag loads I put a hefty crimp on my bullets, on my others, I crimp as I stated.

With an auto pistol and rimless cartrige you don't want to crimp too much because the it head spaces on the case mouth. You want just enought to hold the bullet in.

Buy a LEE brand "Factory Crimp DIe" in the caliber or your choice. <- You will always get the correct crimp.

He said that's what he is using.

Just follow the instructions for installing the die until you get to the part where you turn the crimp down 1/2 to 1 turn after setting it where it touches the brass. I have read where a number of people say the 1/2 turn works great. If there's a problem then try it at 1 turn.

You are very correct.

As for how much, if it will chamber, then it is correct. OR you can get a wilson/midway max cartridge gage to check the round for fit.

Personally I go a full turn on the .45 rounds when crimping lead.

when I started reloading, I used way too much crimp, and every single round would not feed correctly. You don't want to do much more than simply removing the flare. Make the mouth flat with the rest of the casing and you'll be set.
