LEE PRO 1000 questions

Alright I may be buying a lee pro 1000. However it seems that you can only buy them in kits and it also seems like each press can only be setup for one caliber. Can you switch dies on a pro 1000 for diffrent calibers??? How does this thing work exactly?

Yes you can buy extra turrets to switch to similar size calibers.

But you may have to change the shell plate if you go from .223 to 9mm or .380 to .44 Magnum.

My main calibers to reload will be 9mm .45acp and .380acp.

Later I plan to pick up stuff to reload 7mm mauser. And possibly .223 since some guys at work shoot this stuff like its going out of style I'll reload their brass (which I always collect) and sell it back to them.

The Pro 1000 will handle most pistol cartridges and some rifle. the turret that holds the dies is removable and you can have many turrets with different dies available, the switch takes a few seconds. The shell plate and the primer trough can be replaced as well and takes about 10 minutes to do. This makes the reloader very handy. But some of us have more then one Pro 1000. I use two myself, one for 9mm and 40S&W and the other for 45ACP. It should handle the short rifle cartridge like the .223 Rem or 7.62 X 39. I don't think that it will work with the 7mm, you might want to call Lee about that.

Hmmmm..... Maybe I'll just pick up one of their lower priced single stage press to reload my mauser ammo. besides I'll be taking my time on that stuff trying my best to make "match" ammo there and I don't shoot that weapon a whole lot so I won't have to reload a lot. However ammo's going for more than 20 bucks a box right for 20, and that is for the lower priced stuff.

Ive just inherited my old man's Lee Progressive 1000. He was all set up for .45ACP. I've purchased the dies for .40S&W and now I plan on picking up a new die turret, and another shell plate carrier for .40S&W. I'll be set up for both my pistol calibers at that point.

For the price of the shellplate, turret, and dies there should be no problem getting a new setup for each caliber. Then you will spend alot less time getting it dialed back in every time. You'll recoup the price of the new setup *including dies* the very first time you sit down to reload!

Granted I havent picked up my Pro 1000 yet, but at $129 at midway I'd be paying almost that just to set up a "different color" press for another caliber. I'm planning on getting mine as soon as my ammo reserve runs low.

Yep, you can change over calibers no problem. I bought mine originally set up for .45acp, but now have a complete conversion for 9mm. Soon, I'll be getting dies & extra turrets for .40smith and .38super (the shellplate is the same for 9mm, .40smith, & .38super). If you plan on using a bunch of different powders for the rounds you load, then I suggest getting a couple of powder measures and only run one particular type of powder through each individual powder measure to reduces any chance of cross contamination. I've got 2 powder measures right now, one for RedDot (which works really well for 230gr Berry's PRN in .45acp) and one for VvN320 (which I use for 125gr PolyRN 9mm and 200gr LRNFP .45acp), each one is labeled with the powder that's used in it so there is no confusion and I can quickly ID them.

Once you know what you're doing, you can change over completely (different shellplate carrier assembly and die sets) in under 10mins, then do your checks of your settings and get loading.
