Please Clarify +P type ammo info
Hi,
Well, you know what they say about a dumb question.... Guess they say alot of stuff...so I'm askin' anyway.... Anyway, I have XD 45 with 4" bbl. I have been looking at various "personal defense" ammos and would like to know if there is any problem(besides cost) in using Corbon +P type ammo with this pistol or in general any higher pressure 45 ammo. If someone knows of a good ammo reference so I can check this out, I would appreciate you posting it. I can use Google and that's fine but if you have a good one, please post it. Thanks, Gary in Oregon Here's my SEG... |

You won't need Google, just do a search right here on this forum. There have been many threads discussing this very subject, with the information being that Springfield says that +p is fine in XDs.

The XD pistols are rated for +P ammo. I'm not sure what kind of "Ammo Reference" you're looking for. Generally speaking you can find different reviews per round by searching the web.
I'll tell you that I use in both my XD 45 and all my 1911's for Personal Defense. Pow'r'Ball. It's a Corbon product which is a hollow point with a little ball in the tip. The ball does three things. 1) Prevents hollow point "cloging" which would stop a normal hollow point from expanding 2) Allows for easier feed up the ramp. Because of the ball is slick and round you don't run into feed ramp problems (common on 1911's) 3) Equal & Great Expansion because it's the ball which pushes into the round forcing the hollow point open rather than the object you are shooting at forcing the expansion. Here's a Review for you: http://www.gunblast.com/PowRBall.htm If you can't tell, I love this stuff and suggest it to everyone I know.

I use CorBon DPX for carry ammo in all calibers, sometimes its in the backup mags with Federal HST or Ranger T's in the gun. I like the DPX in case things get real nasty and I might have to shoot thru barriers.

+p ammo is fine in you XD, but it will cause add'l. wear on the pistol if used extensively. It's like running your car around everyday @ 90mph instead of 65mph. You'll need to replace parts more frequently. Nothing wrong w/ carying it, but I don't like running it all the time.
I shoot primarily std. vel. ammo & run a mag or two of +p (or full magnums in my rev.) to stay familiar. Your gear will last longer. |

+P and +P+ is fine in your XD.
Personally, I carry a .45 Service with CorBon 45 Auto +P 165gr JHP. It has 1250 fps with 573 ft/lbs of energy

I wouldn't touch anything +P+ as there is no industrial standard for what pressure +P+ ammunition will produce. SAAMI has specified pressures for +P for 38 special, 9mm, 38 Super, and 45ACP (notice 40S&W does not have a +P spec). They do not recognize +P+ specification.
+P+ ammunition is one of two things. Ammunition produced for a specific sub-machine gun or an advertising gimmick, the later more often the case more than the prior. I have read from a few sources that +P+ is informally 15% over the +P designation for that cartridge, but this is not document or enforced by any industrial standards organization. I use 9mm +P in my carry gun but I know my gun is made to handle it and there is an industrial standard that the manufactures load to when they put that destination on the ammunition. You don't get that guarantee with +P+ you just get an unknown. YMMV mcb |
