Katrina also taught me some other things. Ammo, though being important, is not the top of the list. Food, water, ice, gasoline, and cash (or other barterable material).

Food and water. Gotta have it. Can't eat or drink your bullets and without food and water you'll soon not going to need all that ammo in a week or so. MREs will keep for 10 years at room temperature. Longer if you don't care what they taste like. Water, a gallon a day minimum. Stockpile enough for a couple weeks.

Gasoline is needed to run a generator if you decide to stay or to run your vehicle if you bug out. You can't make gas, trap gas, or hunt gas. It doesn't store well and it is a very valuable commodity when the SHTF. Mad Max is closer to the truth than you think.

Credit cards and the like are worthless in a SHTF situation. Cash and barter are the only methods of commerce left. And when the cash runs out you're left with the barter system. With beer and cigarettes you can barter for damn near anything anywhere in the world.

What really tripped me out was ice. A lot of people were at least minimally prepared to ride out the storm for a few days. Enough food and water. A few boxes of ammo. But as the electricity stayed off and the food in the fridge and freezer started to thaw, ice became a very valuable commodity. Often citizens were asked by rescuers if they needed anything. Food? Water? Nope, throw me a bag of ice. MREs tend to negate this need.

I saw this shirt at the last gun show:
AMMO… The curencey for a new melinium

In a short time SHTF cash would be good, in a long term, it be worthless. Ammo does not go bad so if you enjoy shooting it does not hurt to have as much as posisble will certianly never hurt you to have the extra ammount. And as we all know it will only go up in price so buying a lot when you can will only save you some money in the future. But Food and water are just as important, people have said with ammo I could get what I want, all it takes it one bullet to put you down then your familly will really be without. In a SHTF situation most people will bunker down for a few days its after these intial days that I think the Carnage will really start.

FMJ for the stockpile. Currently at about 700 for the 9mm, my goal is about 3000. I have about 300 for the 38 special, goal is 600+. I have about 1,400 for the .223, goal is 10,000+
