I'm new at reloading, and am doing it to be able to shoot more. I bought Berry's 180 gr plated and mixed brass for .40 S&W. I want to get my rounds to mimic the store-bought stuff, and am looking for a powder that is inexpensive. As long as the reloads have decent accuracy, I'm looking for cheap. Any suggestions? Thanks!

You could do worse than WSF... But why would you want to?

Consider that powder is the cheap part of your handload, never sacrifice performance for cost in powder. The primer cost more, the bullets a lot more. WSF is my 1st choice for an all around, mild to wild. Unique is my second choice. You can go to a faster powder, but not get factory equiv vel safely. You can go to a slower powder but they shoot dirty for midrange & lower loads. So stick to one of the medium burners above. You could also throw in Universal, maybe PP, but I am not a huge fan of PP muzzle blast.

.40 XDm reload
Hey guys I am looking for an accurate and lite .40 reload. I have 180g Powerbond FP on hand and have power pistol and titegroup in the powder section. I am shooting an 4.5 inch XDm-40. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Caution should be used when loading 180 gr bullets. The large bullet takes a lot of space in the case so even small fluctuations in overall length can result in very high pressures.

With the ammo shortages I'm looking at getting intro reloading. Are the supplies and equipment I'll need available? Is gunpowder scarce right now? How difficult will it be to find if Obama gets his way?

The thing is just about any powder can be made to go bang in any handgun round. The 40 has a pretty wide range, being a high pressure round, so maybe 15 decent powders can be used. IMO, powders faster than W231 need to be usd ONLY for light target loads, never full power rounds. The pressures are just too high to afford a safety margin for something like a setback. I would NOT load TG in a 40 if it were the only powder available. Well maybem but only at low vel levels.
Now primers, that is a whole diff story. While there are many pwoder options, there are few primer options. You need small pistol primers. Without them, you do not reload, no subsitutions. One can work up laods w/ small rifle primers, but they are in equally short supply for 223 loaders. Primer availability is what every rel;oader worries about. I can make bullets, scrounge powder form other ammo, but w/o primers, I am not reloading.

I just started reloading and started with the basics. If someone could fill me in on what a lot of the lingo used here stands for (xdtalk reloading lingo dictionary) I would appreciate it. I have a state police ballistics lieutenant helping me with safety but I would love to learn a good load that is accurate and reasonably priced for my xdm40 compact. At the risk of being ridiculed for this post I would rather deal with that than remain in the dark on my new hobby. Any help is appreciated

Anyone that ridicules someone for asking legitimate questions is an a$$hole.
Now we just need some legitimate questions.
