Lee makes a catridge trimmer that is cheap and easy. I bought mine over at Sportsmans Warehouse. The trimmer head and holder base ran about 8 bucks. You have to buy the length attachment separately which also comes with a shell holder. For simplicity I chuck the cutter and length assembly in my bench top drill press and run it @ about 1200 rpm. Chuck the shell in the sizer case and it is off to the races. I was under the impression that the 40 head spaces on the case mouth and consistent length is important. Read it in the latest Hogdon reloading annual mag.

Along with the standard 3 die carbide pistol set I would also recommend the factory taper crimp die. Use the crimp and seating die with your 3 die set for seating the bullet only and then crimp with the factory crimp die. It resizes the entire round for consistent chambering.

Many happy reloads.

It's addictive.

Finally got to shoot some more trial loads yesterday. 3.5 grains of titegroup under 180 bear creeks will cycle a 40 tac with 18 pound spring.

Master Blaster 145 moly coated lead FP:

here's some data from today:

Bullet is 145 grain moly coated flat point, Powder it titegroup, OAL is 1.130, Barrel is XD 40 5" and temp is 60 degrees ( )

4.3 987 FPS PF 143
4.5 1011 FPS PF 146
4.8 1090 FPS PF 158
5.1 1122 FPS PF 162
5.4 1164 FPS PF 168

Overall, I prefer the heavier bullet/less powder route for less snappy recoil, but someone gave me the bullets and I wanted to see what different powders would do.

Using 4.3 grains of titegroup, the 145 bullet is minor and 180 is major, but the 4.3/145 combo is snappier than 3.3/180 which is about 135-140 PF. The only advantage would be not changing the powder charge, but it's not a real bunny fart load.

My Load

Here is my load.
  • 180g Laser Cast Lead Projectile
  • 7.5 grains of Accurate Arms #5
  • CCI Small Pistol Primer
  • Speer Brass
  • Seated to 1.120
I got about 980 fps at 4700 ASL at 60 Degrees. I got about 2-4 inch groups at 25 yards.

Here is a load I tested yesterday.
180 Berrys Plated
3.2 Clays
CCI primer
OAL 1.120
Assorted brass (mostly Win)
Crimp .420

Shot soft and cycled my XD service with a 22# spring. Velocity was pretty inconsistent, but it averaged 772 (109 low, 803 high).

It cycled with a 22# spring. Mine would jam like crazy if I did that. I went to the range yesterday to test a few loads but I didn't have a tripod to raise my chrono but the loads I need to test are.

180gr Xtreme Plated RNFPs over:
  • 3.1 CLAYS
  • 3.5gr TiteGroup
  • 4.6gr Power Pistol
  • 4.5gr TiteGroup
  • 6.6gr Power Pistol
Top three are minor loads followed by 2 major loads. I'll get them chrono'd before next months classifiers.

When I see a 109 on my chrono, I toss it as an inaccurate read (wind, errant shadow, etc)

I scrounged up a bunch of 40 brass the other day. I had a lot of cases marked Federal NK that would not take a primer and if they did it was tough. Is this typical of Federal or is the pocket a military one?

Never seen Federal NK headstamp, but that sounds like a crimped primer pocket (usually military)
