Hydroshock in an XD-40?

Hi everyone,

During the warmer months, I used several brands of FMJ ammo like CCI Blazer and WWB for target shooting. Not sure if it was me, the gun, the ammo, or some combination of the three, but I always seemed to have some accuracy issues.

Now, I want to start carrying the XD-40 with me in the car for potential self defense purposes for the time being. Most people say that serious defense calls for more serious ammo, and that Federal Hydroshock is about as serious as it gets. Due to its higher price, it's not good for target practice, but should do the job in the event that the gun has to be used for defense.

Is this true? How does Hydroshock compare for accuracy to other brands?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm not looking forward to the time when I might need to use it, but will use it if needed.

Thank you,
-Bill

I would suggest you shoot any ammo you plan to carry in your gun at the range atleast once a month so you know how it handles in the gun for reliability and accuracy.

I've practiced with Hydrashoks before and they have always cycled reliably and performed accurately. They seem to have about the same amount of recoil and firing characteristics of any other .40SW cartridge.

I've probably fired 50 or so through my XD with no problems. They are just too expensive to practice with on a regular basis. I've fired only the 155-grain hydrashoks.

from what I've heard, the ammo expands poorly compared to other hollow points.

Really? All the tests I've read in gun magazines and on the internet show that they perform well. Where did you hear this, I would be interested in reading it. I'll change carry ammo if it is convincing enough.

You'll be fine with any of the major name Personal Defence ammo's
However, whichever one you settle on, you do need to put at LEAST 50, preferably 100 rounds of it thru. This is to make certain that it will function reliably 100%. Not 90%, not 95%. This is your life we're talking about.

Personaly, I'm partial to the Ranger SXT's. I find that they function more reliably in the various guns I have.

there have been forum members test it on here. I've also shot some into clay soil and didn't like the expansion of it compared to others that I did.

So, clay soil replicates the density of human flesh and bone?? That is not very scientific to me.
