Bulk Ammo?
Does anyone buy the "bulk" ammo like offered on the Cabela's website? I'm sure it's probably reloaded junk but was wondering if anyone had ever gotten it or anything similar off other websites. They've got it listed on the same page as all the name brand ammo except they call it "bulk."

I buy from Cheaperthandirt.com frequently and find that I get as good or usually better prices than WalMart and the FEDEX guy delivers it to my door. You pay a little more for shipping, but when I've compared the prices and no sales tax, I come out ahead. the-armory.com runs a few decent sales as well.

I've been trying to decide on the bulk ammo from there too. I keep eyeballing it when I'm in the store. the 500 round boxes are Wolf ammo, at least in store so i assume it's the same online. The "bulk" ammo in the 250 round boxes, is reloads. I'm really just looking for ammo for my AR, and am torn on whether or not I want to shoot wolf, or reloads.. i'm not so sure I want to shoot either but I don't know. Wolf is wolf, as far as what everyone has to say about it. They say it's dirty, cheap to shoot, but with some guns the steel case can be hard on extractors. It all depends on your gun really. As far as the reloads.. I think I trust cabelas to know have quality reloads. Afterall, they've made their name strong by having quality products and standing behind them. Especially anything that they put their brand name on. And the reloads in the store, have the cabelas sticker on them. the other ones, have the wolf ammo sticker.

One item to look a little deeper into is the comparative pricing, even on Cabelas site. Using 9mm 115gr FMJ as a comparison, here is how some of their offerings shape up from a cost per round basis (rounded to closest cent): Bulk, 300 pack: $0.18 Bulk, 600 pack: $0.17 Bulk, 1200 pack: $0.16 Wolf, 500 pack: $0.16 Wolf, 1000 pack: $0.15 Remington UMC, 600 pack: $0.15 Sellier & Bellot, box of 50: $0.16 Magtech, box of 50: $0.16 Cabelas does throw in dry boxes valued at $13.99 with the Bulk offering and with Wolf, which may become a partial consideration for some. Back when I was buying ammo from Cabelas, I would opt to get 600 rounds of S&B or Magtech 115gr FMJ for the current cost of $95.88 versus the current cost of the 600 round bulk pack of $99.99 (the dry boxes really didn't interest me that much). There is some savings involved with going with the 125gr RNL. Certainly the comparisons may vary by caliber.

Compare those prices to WalMart WWB at 12.88/100 which is obviously $0.13 per round.

Or you can buy from Atlanta Arms & Ammo. It was about .23 a round for me. 147 gr. JHP.
For fun I put a few rounds on the new scale. WWB had a variance of .1 gr. The Atlanta new (they offer reloaded at a better price) was .03 gr. I don't recall the weights, but I will buy some more WWB tomorrow and maybe do some detailed info. I wonder about the Remington UMC stuff? I have shot a box (250) of it but I was making noise and not evaluating. I'm not knowledgeable about this (yet) and not sure what would be acceptable for a pistol cartridge. I talked with the guy at Gander Mountain and he said he likes his rifle rounds within .01 gr.

If your talking action pistol shooting .1 isn't going to hurt you. If your reloading for accurate rifle or bullseye pistol you should be weighing out each round individually by hand anyway. So for factory stuff to be .1 isn't that big of a deal and for the other to be .03 hell that probably better than I do

If weighing factory rounds, there is really no way of knowing if the variation is in the brass, primer, bullet, powder, or combination unless one pulls the bullet and weighs each component individually. Out of curiousity, what brand and model scale gives accurate enough resolution to measure in 100ths of a grain?
