What is +P ammo for XD 45
I've heard some others talk about +P or P+ (not sure which way is correct) ammo for the XD 45. Is this type of ammo more powerfull? Is it safe to use with the services models? Where can I find it?
I did a search but I can't find any threads that answer my questions. Thanks guys

Here you go:
Shooting +p in XD? +P is just loaded a little bit hotter than regular rounds, and is okay for occasional use. I personally wouldn't use it frequently; it just beats up the gun unnecessarily. Many people like it for defensive loads because it has a bit more "oomph" when you need it most, but it's not a necessity. Most sporting goods/gunstores will have a selection of +P variants, but chain stores (like Wal-Mart) might not. Hope this helps.

First Yes the XD-45 will handle the +P Ammo. You will find many types and brands of +P Ammo. Federal has a 165gr Hydro Shok +P that I have tried in my XD-45 service and it worked. also Remington has the Golden Saber 185gr +P That also works great. Corbon has two +ps 185&230gr They also work well. I am sure there may be others I have used the ones I posted with no problems. Now they are costly for 20 and 25 boxs but there carry Ammo. not range Ammo. You shoot a few and find the best ones for your XD.

Some manufacturers also make a "+P+" load. They claim that it is supposed to be even a slight step up from regular "+P"

You won't find a +p+ .45ACP load. You will find that +p .45ACP is common, and that you'd have to shoot tens of thousands of rounds in order to "beat up" your XD, Glock, or any other modern pistol. +p ammo is, apparently, much more common than informative advice on bulleting boards.

I think maybe they make it in 9mm as well. I know they have it in .38 special. Mercmar is right though; with modern guns you don't really have to worrk about +P. The only handguns that manufacturers warn you not to fire it with are usually older revolvers. For example; my old Colt .38 Special Police that was made in 1955 was not rated for +P ammo. The parts back then were not strong enough to hold up to the increased pressure. Most modern guns will handle it just fine though. A good idea would be to call the manufacturer if you have any doubts. Frank

+P+ loading is more common in 9mm. Is is used to cycle sub machineguns. Strangely enough the HI-POINT rifles and handguns are +P+ rated. *note*(THIS IS NOT A PLUG FOR HI-POINT)
Because the round velocity is slower, chamber pressures and barrel stress averages much less when using +P loads in a .45.....9mm velocities will cause a much higher average mechanical stress on a handgun with the hotter rounds. |
