Good HP 9mm round?

I'm still new to my XD-9. They sold me a box of Winchester Supreme Hollow Points with the gun, but I was wondering if there's a better (yet at the same time affordable) HP round out there or if this is considered an okay round?

while any hollowpoint will do a decent job, especially compared to a fmj, most decent ones aren't the cheapest. But unlike normal ammo, price isn't so much an issue. Sure, you need to shoot a few boxes of the ammo to prove it cycles good in your gun, but after that it just sits in a magazine not being shot. If you plan on shooting hollow points regularly, then yes look at some of the cheap stuff. But if you plan on carrying it, get something that is quality. Most good defensive ammo can be found for around the $15-$20 range. I think I just paid around $16 for my hornady TAP that I just got. And from what I see around here, remington golden sabres are around $22. You get 20 in the hornady, and you get 25 in the golden sabres if I remember correctly.

I don't know about speer gold dot, corbon dpx... which is suppose to be really good too, and some of the other stuff all that well. I do know that with the hornady tap, and golden sabres that you get the powders that produce low muzzle flash so you don't night blind yourself. What it really comes down to though, is finding a good quality ammo that feeds reliably. And me personally, I like to go with the good stuff. I figure sure I will pay more to begin with when I test it, but once the tesing is done you really don't need to shoot it much anymore. Shoot a box of it once every month or other month, and that's fine for me.

Black Hills 9mm +P 124 gr new production ammo is loaded with Speer Gold Dots running about 1200 fps. Cost is about $23 per 50 plus shipping if you can't find them locally. Or you can go with the 115 gr +P loaded with Hornady XTP bullets for about the same price. I like the 124 gr better.

$23 per 20 or 25? Nope $23 per 50. Quality control is the same or better than any premium ammo brand out there. Black Hills rocks.

Try out a box or two and thank me in the morning.

There are a lot of good HP's out there.
Stick with one of the big name top quality ones and you'll be fine.
Most of them have aready been mentioned, but the one I carry is the Winchester Ranger SXT. I switched over from the Federal HydraShok's because they feed more reliably in the guns I own.

I have a box of Rangers waiting for testing, but I would be hesitant to carry them defensively because Winchester restricts them to Law Enforcement sales only. It's not illegal for you to have or use them, Winchester would just prefer to keep them in LEO hands.

People gripe about carrying a single action 1911 because of liability arguments, I could see you being in much hotter water if a lawyer tried to push the "you had to get the deadliest ammo possible" route. I prefer to stick to generally-available, new production (non-reloaded) ammo.

It's all about your own comfort level though, and I know some will say that they will carry the most effective ammo possible because it's exactly that - effective. I just keep running the recently-posted trial over and over in my head about the guy who was convicted of murder in part because he used a 10mm to defend himself with. The state effectively argued that this was overkill and the assailant's death was due, in part, to the large, powerful caliber.

This trial doesn't keep me from carrying a 1911 in 45 ACP, but it does keep me from carrying Rangers. I don't want my ammo purchase to seem the least bit shady if it comes to that.

Are these the ones?

For that price, I might actually be able to try some hollowpoints Thanks for the suggestion. How can I tell if these are the ones loaded with the Speer Gold Dots?
All the reviews on it are excellent.

can you post a link to that conviction? I'd be interested in reading about that trial

I like Ranger T's 147gr. and CorBon DPX both are accurate in my 40XD with conversion Barrel and have what I consider good penetration and expansion. The DPX went thru 3 -1/4 inch aluminum plates spaced 1 inch apart and the hole just kept getting bigger with each plate.

That's actually part of the rationale.

DA: Admit it! You were carrying the deadliest ammo you could find!

Me: No sir, I was carrying exactly what the local police do. I figured if it was good enough for them, it was good enough for me.

I carry 147 grain Winchester Rangers in my 9mms. In the past I have used Speer Gold Dots in the same weight. Both are good, but I like the Rangers.
