Ok, I was talking with a friend of mine who is a ccw holder in the great state of Pennsylvania. Since I am still doing research (while I accumulate funds for my first 'new' handgun), I asked him what he carried, how he carried, and what loads he used. I was frankly surprised by his response, and don't really know what to think of it. He said that he has a 9mm and the first 2 rounds are shotshells followed by hollowpoints. Any thoughts on this as a defensive round, or its effectiveness? BTW he carries a glock for those of you who simply must know.

Your friend better hope he never has to defend his life with shotshells.
First off they won't cycle the gun so he'll have to manually chamber each round, second unless he's defending himself from rats, or snakes the shotshells won't do much good.

Your friend better hope someone smarter than himself is with him if a situation every arises that would call for an armed responce.

PA concealed carry
I carry a 1911 mostly. At times I carry a S&W .38. When I get some more rounds out the barrel of my XD 45 service that will most likely become my primary.
I would suggest you fondle and shoot as many different pistols as you can. When you find "THE ONE" you will know. I don't care what it is but you must always remember, in the words of the late great Mr. Earp, "Speed is good, accuracy is final." What ever you pick you must be able to put the rounds where you want them.

For myself, I am planning on getting the XD Service. Not sure of the caliber, but for the first one
You can be sure, based on what I have read in response to my friend's choices, that I will not be using any shotshells. He suffers from being an engineer. He overthinks things, and believes that things that he has worked out on paper will turn out that way in real life. Pray for him. Thanks for your responses.

What is his reason behind the first 2 rnds of shot shell? He needs to read Box o Truth on shooting bird shot for Home Defense. It will help change his mind.

The reasoning was to deter the BG's w/o hurting them too much. Thanks again for the link, and maybe, just maybe you have saved his life.

Are you talking about the CCI shotshells? Don't even think about it!! I tested some out in my xd40. I got 1, just 1 to eject properly. Every other one stovepiped. they don't have enough charge in them to cycle the slide properly. And on top of that, they wouldn't penetrate worth crap. I tested on some drywall, and out of I think 12 shells, and however many BB's are in each one, I think less than a dozen BB's even barely penetrated two sheets of drywall. If your friend is interested in playing games with his life, then by all means advise him to carry shot shells. if he's interested in stopping a threat, and having ammo that cycles properly, tell him to carry regular ammo.
I still have a box that I didn't shoot of this stuff. I never just leave ammo alone, but this stuff was useless to me. i could shoot it, and just cycle the rounds manually when they jam, but that's about it. I might just have to waste it up one of these days, but as far as keeping it in my gun for anything other than messing around, no way. |
