how barrel length affects velocity

Is there a chart that shows how barrel length affects velocity. Like one bullet shot from a 2”, 3”, 4”, 5”,……12”

Not really a chsrt but the bigger the muzzle flash(wasted energy), the slower the bullet.....a G26 and Makarov are about equal in penetration and energy from 2 very different calibers with a slight egde to the Makarov.

From my own testing with my XD-40 Service and XD-40 Tactical I got about 30-50fps reduction in velocity with the 1 inch shorter Service barrel depending on the particular load.

+1

If I run my gaming loads (132PF) in my XDSC, they run Sub-Minor. I have not chrono'd them, but I can tell by the feel.

The longer you trap the gases the higher pressure are built, giving the longer duration or powder burn (sometimes) and accelaration time. Each gun/ammo will perfom diff. but I have seen as much 350 fps with 1" gain. (9mm)

Then I've also seen as low as 50 FPS.

I would hazzard to guees that you can figure ON AVERAGE 100 fps per inch of barrel.

Here's a link to a site that has some data in chart form on different barrel lengths with the .17 HMR round.

http://www.bullberry.com/HMRdata.html

Very clear that a longer barrel produces higher velocities.

I will hazard a guess that you'll NEVER see 350 fps gain from one inch in a 9mm.

Just for comparison I chronographed Wally World 40 S&W WWB 165 fg FMJ
966.3 FPS out of 40XDSC 3 inch barrel
1022.5 FPS out of XD40 Service 4 inch barrel
1065.3 FPS out of XD40 Tactical 5 inch barrel
All were 10 shot averages out of the same box of ammo.

Thanks for the input sound like about 50 - 100 fps is the norm. Interesting that in the .17 the velocity starts to drop off at 19". I would still love to see simular data for 9mm .38 .45 and maybe 30-06 or other pistol and rifle rounds.
