Can someone that REALLY knows about ammo tell me why on all ballistics charts the 40s&w out performs the 45acp????? Unless it's +P 45 ammo....

Because its faster and smaller and weighs less and you can't see it come out the barrel......the same reason a 9mm will go through more water jugs and phone books than both of them.

keep in mind the difference between caliber and cartidge combos. The difference between a .45 and a .40 is .05. The cartridge is what we are really talking about. someone will have to correct me here but I believe the .40S&W has a higher chamber pressure. combine that with faster velocity and you have a bullet that can put as much if not more energy on impact. That however does not tell you what it will do in a body. IMHO no one can tell you that. There are thousands of veriables.

IMHO energy on impact is the only reliable way (that I currently know of) to compare two different cartridges.

I'm guessing he's trying to emphasize the slower velocity which makes it easier to see the bullet in flight.

I have seen my own 9mm bullets in flight (when the light catches it the right way you can see the flash of the jacket); it's not impossible.

Ok I work with a bunch of PhDs and we get in some strange conversations. We had this discussion and could not figure out how someone can see a fast bullet such as a .22. One of the guys found a high speed photo of a bullet that was putting off a contrail. Since the normal humidity is very low around here it took a while but one day when it was lightly raining we had a “field trip” and sure enough at the correct angle and against the right background you could see a “shadow” go down range. It seemed .22 hyper-velocity from a rifle was easier to see then any of the hand gun rounds. However I am getting to close to old and could not see any of them. But the younger guys swore they could see them.

Bullets in flight

The last time I saw a "bullet" in flight was off the coast of Vietnam. a 16" bullet.
