REM Golden Saber vs Hornady "Custom"
I stopped at the local shop and picked up some ammo.
I got 5 boxes of AE 9mm/115gr for 8.49 per. Could have gotten 10 boxes @ 8.00 per (but this ain't payweek). I decided to get some "personal defense" ammo to test this coming weekend. I picked up one box of the Remington Golden Saber 9mm+P 124gr and one box of Hornady "Custom" 9mm 124gr JHP/XTP. ($19.99/$13.99 respectively) Has anyone compared these two? Preference for either? Wallyworld is 45 minutes away and they usually only have 2 boxes of the WWB 100. Thanks for the input. Jim PRNJ |

Since no one has come forward I will give you my take about Rem.Golden Saber Ammo. I have used their 230gr JHP in .45acp and it's a quality Ammo. I bought a box of it in .40 185gr at $22 and also found a bunch of 185+P JHP in .45acp at $10 a box of 25 at a local firearms store. I found it hard to believe it was priced so low as I see it priced from around $18 to $22 sold online at many sites.

I haven't heard of the hornady "custom", but I've heard very good things about the golden sabers. Some of my friends shoot them and say they perform just as good as any of the higher priced hollow points. All the tests that I have seen on the golden sabers suggest that they are quality hollowpoints. That's all I can really tell ya buddy, since I haven't tried the customs, maybe someone else will come along who has.

About a month ago I did a bit of research on the best personal defense ammo, and I had come the the conclusion of the Rem GS. When bout my XD (shortly after the research) I asked "What kind of personal defense ammo do you have?" The guy replied "The best" referring to the Golden Saber. We talked about different types a bit, and that was certainly his preference (and the guys that work there definitely aren't just out to make a sale, they offer true and honest opinions... great customer service). I shot a few of them, and they are very accurate and fed fine. I'd recommend them!

REM Golden Saber vs Hornady "Custom"
I finally got to the range (Ft Dix) and compared these and a few different brands of ammo. What a great day too, watching a KC-10 overhead, doing touch-n-go's at McGuire AFB.
My main goal was to have fun and test the kick each ammo had. I did not recover any slugs. I saw no substantial recoil difference between the two. Both had a little stronger recoil than some of the FMJs. What I did notice is that the Golden Saber shot about 2 inches higher @ 10-12 yds. I also noticed that the Hornady was literally "spot on." Where I aimed, it hit. Made me look good. I shot diff brands of FMJ. The recoil difference was amazing. Just by feel, Remington UMC I picked up at Dick's Sporting goods had the least recoil. Then I shot some WWB and WOW, what a difference! From my perspective, the WWB had the highest recoil, even compared to Rem Golden Saber! AE was next and then WWB was the highest. I loaded two mags with alternating UMC and WWB. I caught myself flinching. I may alternate the UMC FMJ and the Hornady Custom JHP for my next round (no pun intended) of tests, this time against a wet telephone book. Thank you to all you veterans out there. God Bless America... Jimmie D |

Check into the hornady tap, if you are looking for a defensive round and like hornady. To me, especially if you keep a gun for protection in a home, most good true defensive rounds use the special powders that have very low muzzle flash, so you don't night blind yourself. The golden sabers do, and so do the T.A.P. I found that the most accurate grouping I've ever shot, was with the TAP.
