I'm watching to try my luck at deer this season. I've never gone slug, but I want to. I was reading up a little about ammunition. I saw that you can get a slug for a rifle barrel, and then you can get a rifle slug for a smooth barrel. I have both barrels for my 870, so that is not an issue.
My question is this: for you hunters, which combination do you prefer (smooth bore, rifled slug or rifle barrel, smooth slug), why, and which brands do you like? I've seen the Hornady slug that look pretty mean and the Federal Rifled Slug. Thanks.

Your rifle barrel with sabot slugs are going to be by far the most accurate.
Rifle slugs, or more correctly foster slugs, are very hit or miss. In one gun they will shoot relative accurately in another gun they are all over the place. Foster slugs really want to be fire from a fix cylinder bore gun for best accuracy. With choked barrels accuracy almost always suffers. Foster slugs are good for 50-75 yards at best an if you are lucky and the particular brand of slugs you are shooting really like your gun you might stretch foster slugs out to 100 yards. Sabot slugs from a rifled barrel easily reach to 150yard 200 is not unheard of. If you have a rifle barrel I would use that. Buy a bunch of different sabot slug from the major manufactures head to the range and find which one you gun likes the best. $0.02 mcb |

Here in Ohio, we are limited to slug gun hunting and pistols. I have shot 2 deer with my shotguns, both smoothbore, both deer at a distance of less than 50 yards. I just got off the phone and my new shotgun is in... Its an 11-87 with cantalever barrel and I bought a luepold scope for it. I picked up some Hornady Sabots for it this past weekend that are supoposed to drop less than 7 inches at 200 yards. If you have a rifled barrel, then use sabots. A REALLY good slug for 150 yards and under is made by Lightfield. Their accuracy is supposed to be second to none and Im planning on running some of those through my gun as well. Which ever one shoots more accurately, thats the one I will use. I hunt in thick woods but its not uncommon to pass up long shots across a valley. This year, Im taking those shots with confidence! Ill post pics later tonight or tomorrow of the new set-up.
PS. Deer drop in their tracks with a well placed 12 or 20 gauge slug!

When I hunted with my mossberg 500 and rifled barrel I used the lightfields and at 100 yards they are dead on. LIke the man said, your shooting a 50 cal bullet most of the time only real slow!

Silly question from a shotgun noob. I recently purchased a remington 1100 and was told i could shoot slugs out of it. Would i have to take the choke out of the barrel?

My Mossberg 535 ATS w/ rifled deer barrel likes Hastings sabot slugs. According to the trajectory chart, they are supposed to hit POA at 100 yds. I never hunted with it, but I get excellent accuracy at the range. They are extremely consistent from one shot to the next and hold nice groupings at 50 yards. Your mileage may vary.
