The last time I shot it, the muzzle flash was pretty bright.
Admittedly, that was a couple of years ago. I don't like the 155gr weight in .40, but if I did, the flash from the Rem load would prevent me from using it. Rem's Golden Saber line has much less flash, but the standard green/yellow Rem loads don't seem to have flash retardant in them.

I would not be afraid to use it if you can live with the flash. Try it and see if it works for you. I prefer the middle weights of 155 gr and 165 gr for use in my 40's, but that is personal preference.

While the primary purpose of my .40 is competition and not home defense, I have some 180gr Hornady TAP-FPDs should the need arise (I suppose one could say that Hornady puts 10mm bullets in these, too

Anything greater than .380 will be OK for home defense. The key factor is hitting the target.
Me, I rely on my 1911 and REM870.

In my MAC-10, I run with 45ACP. My MAC-11 runs with the .380 and it is a blast to blast.
