How long do snap-caps last ?

Hello all. I have a few 9mm snap-caps. Im not too sure how old they are or how many times theyve been used. Generally, do snap caps last forever or do they wear out? The snap-caps I have are a transparent red with a small spring inside, not sure what brand. Is there a way to test a snap-cap? Never had to really use snap-caps till I got my XD9; dont want to prematuraly break the roll pin. Thanks guys.

I think I have a pair from the mid 90s. About half the paint is gone. They are not the ones with the springs though.

Re: How long do snap-caps last ?

The only ones I know of that are transparent red would be either Pachmyer or Tipton. Tipton are considered one of the best in general and they should last for years of use.

As long as the "primer" isn't dented or unnecessarily malformed it'll continue to last. I've got some 9mm and .45ACP snap caps, the A-Zoom brand, that I've used hundreds of times and aside from some scuffing, still perform great. The 12ga ones I got have been all kinds of chewed up though.

As long as the "primer" part is still in the right place and the things will still chamber, I would say they are good to go.

As long as they don't come flying out of the barrel when you pull the trigger they are still good.

The azoom ones seem to be better built than the Tipton or whatever they're called (ones with springs)

Thanks for the replies. The snap cap I have has a dent on the primer where the firing pin has been hitting it, I'm assuming. Is it still safe to use even with the primer in that condition? Can the primer of a snap cap damage the dog gone firing pin? Thanks
